The scene represents one of the elite cavalry units of Napoleon’s Grande Armée, renowned for discipline, strength, and their prominent role in both battlefield action and imperial pageantry. The print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, illustrated after designs by Horace Vernet and published in Paris in 1843. Although issued decades after the events, the series is widely regarded for its historically accurate rendering of Napoleonic uniforms, equipment, and military bearing. Vernet, the foremost painter of Napoleonic subjects, drew upon first-hand military knowledge and contemporary sources to recreate the imperial army with precision and authority. The Dragoon is shown wearing the distinctive helmet with horsehair crest, green and white uniform with yellow facings, tall riding boots, and full accoutrements, including saber, musket, and rolled equipment. The powerful horse and poised posture emphasize the mobility and striking presence of the Imperial Guard cavalry, a formation personally associated with Napoleon and symbolic of his rule. The clean background and restrained landscape focus attention on uniform detail, making this an especially strong decorative and documentary example.
