About the Item
Will Barnet " Interlude" Silk Screen Print 1982 Hand Signed, Numbered
Framed
This elegant silkscreen print, Interlude (1982), is a classic example of Will Barnet 's ( American 1911–2012) refined American Modernist style, where quiet domestic moments are transformed into timeless, contemplative compositions. The scene depicts a reclining woman seated on a striped sofa, gently accompanied by a cat and a dog—recurring symbolic motifs in Barnet’s work that evoke intimacy, balance, and emotional stillness.
Rendered in Barnet’s signature flattened planes and restrained palette, the composition is defined by clean contours, subtle geometry, and a harmonious interplay of muted grays, warm reds, and soft blues. The carefully controlled line work and simplified forms reflect Barnet’s lifelong commitment to clarity, order, and lyrical calm, distinguishing his work from the gestural intensity of Abstract Expressionism.
Printed as a silkscreen in 1982, this example is hand-signed and dated by the artist and numbered 47 from a limited edition of 250, attesting to its authenticity and collectibility. The print is presented in a clean, modern frame that complements the work without distraction.

About the artist :
Will Barnet ( American 1911–2012) was a highly influential American painter and printmaker, celebrated for his refined Modernist figurative abstraction and his ability to balance representation with lyrical restraint. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, Barnet studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before moving to New York, where he became deeply engaged with the evolving modern art scene.
Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Barnet developed a distinctive visual language marked by simplified forms, flat planes of color, and recurring symbolic motifs—most notably women, cats, and domestic interiors. His work is characterized by quiet introspection, formal balance, and a timeless, meditative quality that set him apart from the emotional intensity of Abstract Expressionism.
Barnet was also a respected educator, teaching for many years at institutions including the Art Students League and Cooper Union, where he influenced generations of artists. His work is held in major museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
Today, Will Barnet is regarded as a central figure in 20th-century American Modernism, admired for a body of work that bridges tradition and modernity with exceptional clarity and elegance.

Will Barnet
At the beginning of his career, Will Barnet was known for his figural depictions of domestic scenes. But, as he continued to stylistically develop, Barnet arrived at abstract geometric paintings far removed from his original career. A part of the Indian Space Painters group, Barnet was inspired by Native American art in creating these divergent images. Throughout his career, Barnet oscillated between representational and abstract paintings, never fully settling on one. He has received the National Medal of Arts in 2011, and his work has been displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
