About the Item
The 1896 original poster Cabourg à 5 heures de Paris by Privat-Livemont, part of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche series (Plate 88), is a stunning representation of the Belle Époque era's elegance and artistic innovation. Commissioned to promote the seaside resort town of Cabourg, this poster captures the allure of early French tourism, when leisure travel became increasingly accessible to the upper middle class.
Henri Privat-Livemont, one of the leading figures of Art Nouveau, imbues this work with his signature style—graceful lines, soft curves, and harmonious colors. Known for his depictions of refined femininity, Privat-Livemont often featured elegant women in flowing attire, which became emblematic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. Here, the poster likely portrays a serene scene of relaxation and sophistication, inviting Parisians to escape to the picturesque coast of Cabourg, a destination synonymous with elegance and tranquility.
At the heart of this poster's appeal is its ability to embody the ideals of la Belle Époque, a period marked by optimism, beauty, and cultural flourishing. Privat-Livemont’s mastery of typography and composition enhances the poster's visual impact, creating a sense of lightness and movement that resonates with the joys of seaside leisure.
As part of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche—a celebrated portfolio of 256 lithographic plates featuring the finest poster art of the late 19th century—this work showcases Privat-Livemont’s contribution to the golden age of poster design. Selected by publisher Jules Chéret, the series highlights the pinnacle of commercial art, where posters became both functional advertisements and works of art worthy of collection.
Today, the Cabourg à 5 heures de Paris poster is revered not only for its artistic beauty but also as a reflection of the transformative period when travel and tourism flourished in France. It remains a cherished piece among collectors, exemplifying the timeless elegance and charm of Art Nouveau.

1917 original poster by Albert Besnard - 3e emprunt de la défense nationale
By Albert Besnard
Located in PARIS, FR
This 1917 original wartime propaganda poster, designed by Albert Besnard, was created to promote the Third National Defense Loan (3e Emprunt de la Défense Nationale) in France during World War I. As the war raged on, France needed financial support from its citizens to sustain military efforts, and posters like this played a crucial role in mobilizing the public to contribute to the war effort.
The composition is rich with symbolism and emotion. At the forefront, a serene yet resolute woman, draped in blue and white, holds an innocent child while extending an olive branch—a universal sign of peace. Behind her, a winged allegorical figure of Victory, clad in dramatic red robes, brandishes a sword and urges forward action. This juxtaposition between maternal protection and military force highlights the dual message of the poster: peace can only be achieved through victory.
The bold red typography reads:
"SOUSCRIVEZ POUR HÂTER LA PAIX PAR LA VICTOIRE" ("Subscribe to hasten peace through victory"), emphasizing the patriotic duty of citizens to invest in war bonds as a means of securing France’s triumph and eventual peace.
Created in the late phase of World War I, this poster reflects France’s determination and resilience. The use of dynamic lines, rich colors, and classical figures is characteristic of Besnard’s artistic style, blending Academic and Symbolist influences. This piece is not only a historical artifact but also a powerful example of propaganda art...

GEORGES REDON (1869-1943) BOULOGNE S. MER. 1905.
41 3/4x29 1/2 inches, 55 1/4x75 cm.
While on the surface this appears as an innocent enough image promoting travel to one of France's premier beach resorts, it is, in fact, also one of the most suggestive Belle Epoque posters. Despite the staid Victorian style of swimwear in red, the relationship between the woman and the waves is hard to ignore. Like all great posters, once it has the viewer's attention it also advertises many of the other pleasures and attractions available in Boulogne. Listing off a few of the wonderful things that you can do in Boulogne is magnificent theatre, casinos, golf, horse races, pigeon shooting...
