Henri Matisse created Spray of Leaves as part of his iconic Cut-Outs series during the later years of his life, specifically in the early 1950s. The Cut-Outs emerged as a revolutionary artistic approach for Matisse, beginning around 1947 and continuing until his death in 1954, when physical limitations led him to work with paper cut-outs rather than painting or sculpture.
Spray of Leaves is believed to have been created around 1953, exemplifying Matisse's mastery of form and color through his innovative "drawing with scissors" technique. This silkscreen reproduction captures the vibrancy and simplicity of Matisse's original cut-out, paying homage to the creativity of his later years.
