Lithography executed by English artist Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) who introduced lithography into England. Mounted on light board within a gilt ruled border as issued. Hand pencil titled lower left. First folio edition. Portfolio: Joseph Nash's 'The Mansions of England in the Olden Time', published in London, England, 1839. Provenance: single collection of recently deceased James E. Horigan who lived in England and owned a gallery and later moved to Colorado. Reference: Tooley - 'English Books with Coloured Plates' No. 337. Board size: 14" x 17". Image size: 11.25" x 14.25". Some wave to board, some light toning and foxing at outer white margins associated with age. In overall good condition.
Nash (1809-1878) subtitled this formidable work on Tudor (16th-century) domestic architecture as “depicting the most characteristic features of the domestic architecture of the Tudor Age, and also illustrating the costumes, habits, and recreations of our ancestors.” Nash was a draughtsman and lithographer of architectural views, trained by A. C. Pugin. He preferred a freer, more atmospheric style to that of his mentor. Here Nash was a perfect partner for C. J. Hullmandel, the famous British lithographer...
