Wanda Gág, Christmas Eve II, Greetings from the House of Weyhe, 1927, lithograph
Located in New York, NY
Wanda Gág was born into an artistic German-American family in Minnesota. She attended the Sr. Paul School of Art and the Minneapolis School of Art. In 1917 she received a Scholarship for the Art Students League, in NYC. She achieved remarkable success as a young woman in 1928 when she wrote and illustrated the children's classic, Millions of Cats. It is now considered one of the very first modern picture books. In the 1931 she and her husband, Earle Humphreys, settled in New Jersey. Throughout the 1930s and 40s she made paintings and prints. The work presented here was published by the Weyhe Gallery in 1927, just when Millions of Cats was probably in the works. It shows a Christmas tree decorated with real lighted candles and a strangely arranged room. The corners where the walls and ceilings meet are carefully drawn to create a space at once cozy and bizarre. The metal bed frame and pleated curtains...
