Original exhibition poster designed by Jasper Johns for Dayton’s Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. Executed as a color offset lithograph on thick paper, the poster features False Start 1 (1961), a vibrant lithographic work derived from Johns’s celebrated painting False Start (1959).
The composition explodes with multicolored brushstrokes overlaid by stenciled color words that deliberately contradict the hues depicted, a hallmark of Johns’s exploration of perception, language, and visual meaning. This poster captures the energy of Johns’s most important period and was created at a time when his work was being exhibited widely in major American institutions.
