The image size is 36.5 x 27.25 inches and the framed dimensions are.49.5 x 40 inches. From the edition of 500 (there were also 200 Romans, 40 APs and 10 HCs). Framed in a contemporary black frame.
Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Kiraly's publisher Chalk
Vermilion Fine Arts. This print is therefore as new, with no prior ownership, coming straight from the publisher.
With Fortune Teller, John Kiraly steps into one of his most dramatic narrative scenes—an intricate blend of fantasy, symbolism, and theatrical elegance. The composition brings together richly costumed figures, architectural flourishes, and a luminous night sky, creating a tableau that feels both staged and dreamlike. Kiraly’s signature attention to detail is on full display: ornate fabrics, expressive faces, polished marble surfaces, and the spotted coat of the leopard all contribute to the work’s vivid presence.
At the center stands the enigmatic fortune teller, poised between certainty and mystery as she presents a glowing crystal sphere. Around her, a cast of characters—part performer, part mythic figure—enhances the sense of intrigue. Familiar Kiraly motifs reappear: lush foliage, moonlit water, distant towers, and ornamental columns that frame the narrative and anchor it in his imagined world of heightened realism.
The serigraph’s palette is rich and theatrical, with deep greens, violets, golds, and a striking cobalt sky that sets the tone for the unfolding scene. Created from an exceptionally complex process involving more than 130 colors, the print captures the depth, texture, and clarity of the original painting with remarkable precision.
Though the work is filled with symbolic gestures and suggestive details, Kiraly leaves its meaning open to interpretation. Fortune Teller invites the viewer to engage with the characters, follow their interactions, and consider the story being hinted at but never fully explained. It is a piece that rewards close looking—one that reveals new nuances each time it’s revisited.
A compelling example of Kiraly’s narrative imagination and technical mastery, Fortune Teller offers both visual drama and a sense of timeless enchantment, making it a striking centerpiece for any collection.
John Kiraly (American, b. 1943)
New York–born and Florida-raised artist John Kiraly is celebrated for his lush, dreamlike visions of tropical architecture. Best known for the large-format serigraphs he created in the late 1980s and 1990s, Kiraly transforms verandas, pavilions and secret courtyards into immersive escapes filled with palms, orchids and cascading water. His meticulously crafted prints turn any interior into a sunlit terrace overlooking the sea.
Kiraly moved from New York to Florida as a child and later studied art at the University of Miami on a full scholarship, working under painters John Clinkenburg and Eugene Massin. Restless in the classroom, he left to travel through Europe, Central and South America before settling in the Bahamas, where he opened his own gallery and absorbed the saturated light and exuberant plant life that would define his mature work. In 1973 he relocated to Key West, beginning a lifelong exploration of tropical houses, gardens and waterfronts as his primary subject.
Throughout the 1990s, Kiraly developed an instantly recognizable style: crisp, idealized “tropical realist” scenes in which arcades, fountains and tiled terraces sit amid dense foliage and moonlit skies. Working in complex, multi-color serigraphy, he produced richly layered prints such as Celebration, Positano Moon, Temple of the Butterflies and Fortune Teller. These intricately printed limited editions have remained sought after by collectors who love Key West, the Mediterranean and other tropical destinations like Italian coastal towns, Carribean courtyards and lush Brazilian gardens.
Today, Kiraly’s work speaks directly to collectors who want interiors that feel like a permanent vacation. The generous scale of his serigraphs, their intricate detail and layered color, and their sense of cinematic escape make them ideal statement pieces for coastal homes, contemporary spaces in need of warmth, or anyone with a love of travel and tropical light. Each edition captures the atmosphere of a private paradise while offering the craftsmanship and scarcity serious collectors expect.

Herbert Ashwin Budd
The Fortune Teller
1881-1950
Oil on canvas, signed 'H.A Budd' lower right
Image size: 18 ½ x 14 ¾ inches (47 x 37.5cm)
Original frame
Rendered in an almost autumnal colour palette with Darnley Fine Art, Budd’s oil painting depicts a Romani Gypsy engaging in the practice of fortune-telling whilst an enraptured crowd watches on. Clasped in the fortune-teller’s hand is a crystal ball, whilst behind him is a wall on which a deck of cards is pinned. Crystallomancy and cartomancy are two ways in which fortunes have historically been told, and are two practices particularly associated with Roma communities. In communities where Romani people have historically been confined to the periphery, fortune-telling - or dukkering, as it is called in the Romani language - provided an opportunity to earn money whilst practicing their own culture.
Budd was known for his paintings depicting scenes of life from London, so it is likely that the setting of this painting is an anonymous London street. It is easy to see a continuity between the performer depicted in this work from the early 20th century, and the variety of magicians and acrobats enticing crowds in today’s world.
Herbert Ashwin Budd
Herbert Ashwin Budd was born in Staffordshire in 1881. In his twenties, he was an apprentice lithographer at Allbut
Stanley, and was eventually elected a member of the Amalgamated Society of Lithographic Artists in 1901. Between 1903 and 1907, Budd studied at the Hanley School of Art before winning a scholarship to study at South Kensington’s Royal College of Art.
Budd was an Associate of the Royal College of Arts and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Ipswich Art Club - he was also given an Honourable Mention at the 1927 Paris Salon. In the 1930s, he worked for London Transport and designed their travel posters, whilst also teaching at St Martin’s School of Art until 1949.Herbert Ashwin Budd passed away in 1950, leaving behind a wonderful artistic legacy with his striking oil paintings of London...
