About the Item
Adams Wirt Garrett was a Texas native who was raised in Oklahoma and came to New York City. He earned a Masters Degree in Art from Columbia University and attend the Art Students League. He was on the WPA in the 1930s and in the Navy during World War II. Later, in addition to teaching at the League he taught art in Newark and Metuchen public schools and lived in New Jersey. in 1998 the exhibition, Adams Wirt Garrett: A Retrospective, was held at the Drake House Museum.
An impression of this subject is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library (reference number E-274). Woodland is signed and titled in pencil, and initialed and dated in the plate at middle left. It was made in an edition of 25 for the NYC-WPA -- the project's stamp at the left under the image.
The pure landscape subject is somewhat unusual for the period, but the freedom and joy of the expressive quality of the drawing style is a pleasure to see. And personally it speaks to me of New Jersey's precious wilderness areas.
