Sepia mezzotint by Richard Earlom (1743-1822) After Claude Gellee ('Claude Lorrain') (1600-82).
From 'Liber Veritatis; or A Collection of Prints after the original designs of Claude le Lorrain; in the collection of His Grace the Duke of Devonshire. Executed by Richard Earlom, in the manner and taste of the drawings.' (1777-1819). Published by John Boydell.
Richard Earlom's productions for the "Liber Veritas" represent the finest of eighteenth century mezzotint engraving. To simulate the effects of Claude Lorrain's wash drawings, Earlom employed both etching and mezzotint to create both strong and subtle tonal values.
