About the Item

Cedar, 2022 Screenprint on Somerset Velvet Antique 280gsm hand-signed and numbered 52.6 x 44.2 cm - Framed 48 x 38 cm - sheet Printer's Proof - Edition 1 of 3 To commemorate Ai Weiwei’s gift of a tree sculpture, Cedar, 2022, to Downing College, Cambridge, UK, the artist created this exclusive limited edition screenprint to support The Heong Gallery. The print is based on the artist’s freehand Chinese ink drawing of his tree sculpture. Ai Weiwei is a prominent Chinese contemporary artist and activist whose work transcends traditional artistic boundaries to address pressing social and political issues. Born in 1957, Ai's diverse body of work includes sculpture, installation, photography, film, and architecture, often challenging authority and advocating for human rights and freedom of expression. He gained international attention for his role in designing the iconic "Bird's Nest" stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics but later became a vocal critic of the Chinese government's stance on issues such as censorship, corruption, and human rights abuses. Ai's art often reflects his personal experiences and confronts the complexities of contemporary society, whether through his provocative installations or his use of social media to mobilize support and raise awareness for causes. Despite facing harassment, censorship, and even imprisonment by the Chinese authorities, Ai continues to fearlessly use his art as a tool for activism and to inspire global dialogue on pressing social and political issues.
