About the Publication: Fauves, VII, Collection Pierre Levy, published in 1972 by Fernand Mourlot, Paris, is the seventh volume in a landmark series devoted to the Pierre Levy collection, one of the most important private holdings of twentieth century French art. Conceived as both a scholarly and visual record, the series documents the work of leading modernists associated with Fauvism and its wider influence on early twentieth century painting. Created in collaboration with Mourlot Freres, the premier lithographic workshop in France, the folio translates major canvases from the collection into richly tonal lithographs. Issued in a single edition on Arches velin, the publication stands as an important testament to the relationship between collector, publisher, and master printer, and remains an essential contribution to the historiography of French modernism and the tradition of museum quality art albums of the postwar era. About the Artist: Andre Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founding fathers of Fauvism whose radical use of pure color and simplified form redefined modern art in the early twentieth century. Born in Chatou, near Paris, Derain initially studied engineering before turning to painting, where his collaboration with Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck ignited a revolution in color and expression. His early landscapes of Collioure and London burst with vibrancy and emotional energy, marking a decisive break from Impressionism and establishing him as a leading innovator of the avant-garde. Drawing inspiration from Paul Cezannes structure, Paul Gauguins color harmonies, and the optical theories of Georges Seurat, Derain developed a style that balanced intensity and order, bridging Fauvism and the emerging currents of Cubism. Throughout his career, he moved among the great creative minds of modernism, including Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, sharing with them a commitment to experimentation and form. Derains later work evolved toward classical composition and sculptural clarity, influencing generations of artists who sought to reconcile tradition with modern innovation—from early abstractionists to postwar colorists and Neo-Expressionists. Today, his paintings remain cornerstones of museum and private collections worldwide for their brilliance, historical significance, and enduring beauty. The artists highest auction record was achieved by Arbres a Collioure (1905), which sold for 16281250 GBP (approximately 24 million USD) at Sothebys, London, on June 22, 2010.
