About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Andre Masson (1896–1987), titled L’epervier au dessus du torrent (The Hawk Above the Torrent), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 27–28, originates from the 1953 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1953. This striking composition captures Masson’s mastery of gesture and symbolism, blending natural energy with dreamlike imagery. L’epervier au dessus du torrent embodies the artist’s fascination with the interplay between instinct and consciousness, movement and stillness—a poetic reflection of his surrealist vision. Through fluid lines and rhythmic dynamism, Masson evokes the elemental forces of nature and the subconscious, bridging the boundaries between chaos and harmony. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 21 inches, with centerfold and stitch perforations as issued. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the foremost modern artists of the 20th century. Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, Andre Masson, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. About the Artist: Andre Masson (1896–1987) was a French painter, printmaker, illustrator, and stage designer whose fearless experimentation and exploration of the unconscious made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art. A pivotal member of the Surrealist movement, Masson developed his revolutionary technique of automatic drawing in the 1920s, translating the spontaneous impulses of the mind directly onto paper and canvas without rational control. Born in Balagny-sur-Therain, France, and trained in Brussels and Paris, he survived the harrowing experience of World War I, which deeply shaped his fascination with violence, mythology, and the primal instincts of humanity. Immersed in the Paris avant-garde, he moved in the same circles as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, sharing with them a commitment to breaking the boundaries of traditional art. His dynamic compositions combined lyrical abstraction, symbolic form, and visceral emotion, influencing an entire generation of artists. During his exile in the United States in the 1940s, Masson’s gestural energy and automatic methods profoundly impacted young American painters like Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, and Willem de Kooning, helping lay the foundation for Abstract Expressionism. Throughout his career, Masson’s work evolved from violent dreamscapes to radiant, nature-inspired visions, reflecting both chaos and harmony. His influence can be traced through later movements in Neo-Expressionism and contemporary abstraction, and his paintings remain sought after by collectors and museums worldwide. The artist’s highest auction record was achieved by Gradiva, which sold for $3,125,485 at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 8, 2010.
