About the Item

An extremely scare impression of an image Landeck etched while touring Europe after his graduation from Columbia University. Drypoint etching on Japon paper, 9 11/16 x 9 7/8 inches (246 x 251 mm); sheet 11 5/8 x 12 1/4 inches (295 x 311 mm), full margins. Signed and inscribed "2" in pencil in the lower margin. An extremely scarce image, there are only a few known impressions from an unrealized edition of 100. Another known impression, the next sequential print, numbered "3," exists in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, accession number 86.68.8. Armin Landeck was born on June 4, 1905, in Crandon, Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Michigan and then Columbia University, graduating in 1927. After a brief tour of Europe, Landeck returned to New York, and began focusing on printmaking. In 1934 he and fellow artist Martin Lewis founded The School for Printmakers, where they both taught. The school closed in 1935 and Landeck went on to work with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Landeck's work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Landeck received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1953.
