About the Item

The Pagoda of Ninnaji Temple in Kyoto with Cherry Blossoms - Woodblock Print Beautifully executed Showa-era print by Japanese artist Benji Asada (b. 1899 d. 1984.) This print shows the famous five-story pagoda at Ninnaji Temple as cherry blossom trees bloom around it. A blossoming tree takes the foreground of the piece, with the top two stories of the pagoda rising up behind it, bracketed by other foliage. The print is primarily executed using subtle orange and green tones, balanced by tan neutrals. Frame size: 22.38" H x 16.63" W Image size: 14.13" H x 9.13" W Signed with artist signature and stamped with Uchida Atelier seal in bottom left corner. Benji Asada was born in Kameoka, near Kyoto in 1899. He studied at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts, as well as the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. Asada practiced in the sosaka hanga printmaking style, in which the artist was the designer, carver, and printer of the piece rather than the traditional shin hanga method in which workshops divided the labor of printmaking. He participated in the 1928 publication of the magazine Han (meaning “Prints”) alongside artists Un'ichi Hiratsuka, Masao Maeda, Umetarô Azechin, and Tomikichirô Tokurik. He became a founding member of Kyoto’s Sosaku Hanga association in 1929. Asada’s art is now held in many major international collections such as the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, the British Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

These institutions taught and advocated Western-style painting, greatly influencing Yoshida’s artistic development.
