About the Item
Quiet winter scene on a frozen lake by listed artist Bernard Gantner (France, b. 1928). Presented in a rustic wood frame. Signed and numbered in pencil: edition number "149/275" lower left margin; signed "Gantner" lower right margin. Image, 15.25"H x 21.63"W.
Bernard Gantner was born in Belfort, France in 1928, into a family from the Alsace region of France. At the age of nine years old his talent emerged; his propensity for drawing was remarkable. His grandfather, who was a teacher, was able to nurture and encourage Gantner's gift, and taught him to
appreciate the wonders of nature. During World War II, Gantner was fortunate in that the curator from the museum in Belfort became his mentor, and initiated him into the world of oil painting. The museum was closed to the public because of the war, and so Gantner practically had the museum to himself. Gantner was able to admire and study the medieval works, and art by such renowned artists as Delacroix, Courbet and Jongkind. After completing school in Belfort, Gantner went to Paris to expand his horizons. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, and spent much of his time soaking in the enormous amount of culture Paris had to offer; the museums, the galleries, the architecture. After about a year, Gantner returned home, but he began to experience many material hardships. This difficult time, though, never daunted his purpose nor compromised his standards. At the end of the
1950's, Gantner was noticed by the great art critic Claude Roger Mars. Shortly after that, he won the Critic's Prize in 1961 and since that time Gantner's reputation never ceased to grow. Also renowned for his remarkable work in lithography, Gantner has illustrated several De Luxe collector's editions. He is known for his landscape paintings, especially in winter, and has also produced lithographs used for book illustrations. There have been more than 60 exhibitions devoted to his work in France and abroad. He has exhibited in many galleries in the United States, including Wally Findlay and Dyansen, He has his own museum in La Chapelle-sous-Chaux, near Belfort.
His images speak to those seeking the picturesque and the assuringly comfortable coverlet of snow. Gantner's work, in oils, watercolor, drawings and lithographs, has a nearly palpable serenity. His work is done in slashing whites, tans and blacks with looming ultramarine skies. Gantner's passion is for the soft and gentle, the changing seasons. Again and again it speaks to those who still yearn for peace and sublimity.

In 1928, Hungarian-born Sidney Zoltan Lucas founded "Camilla Lucas Publishing" which encompassed a wholesale art publishing house and a retail art gallery. This business was both wholesale and retail and dealt in reproductions of antique, modern, and contemporary prints. It also sold original art including etchings, lithographs, and paintings. Starting in the 1930's and continuing into the 1950's, Sydney Lucas traveled to Europe periodically and contracted with French and Flemish artists to publish their work under the banner of the "Paris Etching Society."
During his career, Sydney published many thousands of images. He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more.
Later on in the 1950s, Sydney and his wife Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985 the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum...
