About the Item

Watercolour in the Tuscan countryside, Elisabetta Del Monte Bourbon, signed and dated 1829. Technique: watercolour on paper. Sheet dimensions: 25 × 21 cm Dimensions with frame: 36 × 39 cm Date and place: Florence, February 22, 1829 Style: Louis Philippe, Charles 10th. On the reverse of the sheet there is an autograph signature with date, written in an elegant 19th-century hand, giving the name of the artist and the place of execution: Florence, February 22, 1829. The work is therefore signed and dated by Elisabetta Baldelli Del Monte Bourbon, marchioness, active in Florence in the first quarter of the 19th century and documented as an Honorary Member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno (elected in 1832). The watercolour depicts a scene of everyday life in the Tuscan countryside, set in the surroundings of Florence. The composition includes a nurse holding a child, a lady dressed in light colors with a hat descending from a villa, a seated peasant woman with a striped apron, traditional headwear and a basket, a peasant leading a loaded donkey or mule, and a dog in the foreground. The landscape is structured by rural buildings and a large weeping willow, which gives rhythm and atmosphere to the scene. On the reverse there is an old lining, made from a large sheet of laid paper folded in four, applied as reinforcement and protection, and covered by a wooden backing panel. The paper shows small imperfections and losses along the blue-tinted border framing the watercolour, while the painted area itself is in excellent condition. Wooden frame of fine quality, dating from the first half of the 19th century and contemporary with the work.
