About the Item
Arrest of the Palateros is one of Frank Romero’s most compelling social-commentary images, depicting the arrest of palateros—ice-cream vendors—in Echo Park for operating without permits. Set against Romero’s signature neon-bright Los Angeles landscape, the work merges social justice themes with the vibrancy, humor, and cultural specificity that define Chicano art. The scene’s tilted perspective, rhythmic brushwork, and saturated palette are hallmarks of Romero’s celebrated visual language, rooted in the urban life and car culture of East Los Angeles.
This impressive 32-color serigraph was printed at Modern Multiples Fine Art Editions under the direction of master printer Richard Duardo, whose workshop produced many of the most important contemporary editions in Los Angeles. The print is signed and numbered in ink, #105 from the edition of 110, and printed full-bleed to the sheet edges. The edition is nearly sold out.
Frank Romero is one of the key figures of the Chicano art movement and a founding member of Los Four, the influential collective that helped bring Chicano art to mainstream museum recognition. His work has been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Japan, and is included in major public collections such as:
The Smithsonian American Art Museum
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
The National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.
The Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, California
A dynamic and culturally significant work, Arrest of the Palateros embodies Romero’s distinctive blend of political commentary, community narrative, and the electric visual energy of Los Angeles.

Frank Romero
Throughout his 40 year career as an artist, Frank Romero has been a dedicated member of the Los Angeles arts community. As a member of the 1970s Chicano art collective, Los Four, Romero and fellow artists Carlos Almaraz, Beto de la Rocha and Gilbert Lujan, helped to define and promote the new awareness of La Raza through murals, publications and exhibitions. Los Four's historic 1974 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was the country's first show of Chicano art at a major art institution. Since then, Romero has successfully balanced a career in both the public and private arenas. He has completed More than 15 murals throughout Los Angeles, and was a key contributor to the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival with “Going to the Olympics,” a large scale mural which adorns one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways (Highway 101). Romero has exhibited extensively in the United States, Europe and Japan. His work is featured in many permanent collections, including the National Museum of Art in Washington D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, CA.

Frank Romero created this serigraph after learning that the original mural, completed on the 101 freeway in Los Angeles, 1984, had been painted over. The mural, which was done for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, has since been restored.

Elite Force
By Alejandro Alfonso
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
24 x 31.5 inches, framed
We proudly welcome Alejandro Sainz Alfonso, (b.1965), to the fold. Alfonsos hugely colorful and at times, comedic take on his life in Cuba is expressed in this series of silkscreen prints. From “Fried Potatoes” to “Review of History” we see a world from the perspective of a population living under the sea inside of the 100 year old divers suits. When I asked him if this is what it is like to live in Cuba under the current political regime – he said “no – that this is what its like to be a human on planet earth”. We were intrigued to see Cuba, from an artistic perspective. Like Darwin’s Galapagos Islands, we were able to see a vibrant artistic community that has had very few outside influences since 1959. The visual and literary diet seems to have been limited to 1950s movie stars, Albrecht Durers prints...
