About the Item

This is a 19th century color lithograph entitled "Palais de Glace, Champs-Elysees" (Ice Palace, Champs-Elysees) created by Jules Cheret and published in 1896 in Paris, France by Cheret himself as plate 17 in his famous series of miniature colored stone lithographs of popular Belle Epoch posters entitled "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" (The Masters of the Poster), which was released to subscribers in groups of four over a five year period. The poster depicts a colorfully dressed woman skating in the Ice Palace on the Champs-Elysées, with a gentleman behind her. The woman occupies the center of the poster, drawing a diagonal line across the print between the text in the lower left and the upper right. It is signed by Jules Cheret in the plate on the right, mid-image. The series title and plate number (17) are in the lower left and a blind stamp designed by Cheret with the series title and printer is in the lower right. The color lithographs released in Cheret's series Maitres de l’Affiche were printed by Chaix imprimerie in groups of four for five years. The publication "Les Maitres de l’affiche" celebrated the great posters and poster artists of the time. Important posters were printed using color stone lithography in a smaller in scale than the original posters, and released to subscribers over a period of five years. This striking color lithograph is in excellent condition other than a small paper loss in the right lower corner. The print series and the plate number appear in the lower left and the embossed blindstamp of Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix, which was designed by Cheret, is in the lower right. The sheet measures 15.38" high and 11.25" wide. Art Nouveau posters by French artists of the Belle Epoch era in Paris have become extremely popular and collectible. Jules Cheret, a prominent and now famous poster graphic artist, recognized the popularity of these posters which inspired him to create color lithographs of them, which were printed by Chaix imprimerie and published by subscription over a five year period in the 1890's in a series called "Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix", which were avidly collected then and have continued to gain in popularity to the present.

A Pair of Framed 19th Century Colored Lithographs of Tudor Scenes by Joseph Nash
By Joseph Nash
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a pair of framed 19th century tinted lithographs with hand-coloring entitled "Gallery Over the Hall, Knowle, Kent" and "Terrace Bramshill, Hants" by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after drawings by Joseph Nash (1809-1878), from "Mansions of England in the Olden Time", published in London in 1839-1849. Nash's publication consists of a series of views of Tudor domestic architecture, which Nash said depicted "the most characteristic features of the domestic architecture of the Tudor Age, and also illustrating the costumes, habits, and recreations of our ancestors." The scenes of the aristocratic ladies and gentlemen (including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I), who are depicted inhabiting the rooms of these great houses, were taken directly from the portraits on the walls. Charles Joseph Hullmandel, was involved in the creation of these lithographs. He was a famous British lithographer, who invented the "lithotint" process, which he named and patented in 1840. This technique, allowing for greater nuance and value gradation than pure lithography, was an ideal means of expression for Nash's historically rich and picturesque depictions of Tudor mansions and their inhabitants. Hullmandel is also remembered for creating many lithographs from the paintings by J. M. W. Turner. The "Gallery Over the Hall" depicts a great hall with children playing with skittles (wooden pins resembling bowling pins), a doll and what looks to be a St Charles spaniel, while a lady in Tudor attire watches over them next to a massive stone fireplace. Adults are watching from in the distance while a man bows...
