About the Item

This is a 19th century color lithograph entitled "Expo Salon des Cents" (Salon of the Hundred) created by Georges de Feure and published between 1898 in Paris, France by Jules Cheret as plate 10 in his famous series of miniature colored stone lithographs of popular Belle Epoch posters "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", released to subscribers in groups of four for five years. It depicts an orange-headed women wearing a hat, a luxurious orange-colored fox color and holding a white flower. She appears pensive, perhaps thinking of something troubling. de Feure often depicts a solitary woman in his work. The "Salon of the Hundred" was a small gallery on the premises of the magazine ‘La Plume’ where artists and designers often displayed their work. Georges de Feure (1868-1943) was a French painter, illustrator, theatrical and interior designer, and industrial art designer in the symbolism and Art Nouveau styles. De Feure designed influential posters and interiors and gained wide recognition in the 1890s for his elegant, ethereal and often mysterious depictions of women. This color lithographs released in Cheret's series Maitres de l’Affiche were printed by Chaix imprimerie between the years 1895 and 1900. The publication "Les Maitres de l’Affiche" celebrated the great posters and poster artists of the time. Important posters were printed using color stone lithography in a smaller in scale than the original posters, and released to subscribers over a period of five years. This striking color lithograph is in excellent condition other than a few small spots in the margins of the sheet, but only two tiny faint barely perceptible spots in the poster margins. The print series and the plate number appear in the lower left and the embossed blindstamp of Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix, which was designed by Cheret, is in the lower right. The sheet measures 15.25" high and 11.13" wide. Art Nouveau posters by French artists of the Belle Epoch era in Paris have become extremely popular and collectible. Jules Cheret, a prominent and now famous poster graphic artist, recognized the popularity of these posters which inspired him to create color lithographs of them, which were printed by Chaix imprimerie and published by subscription over a five year period in the 1890's in a series called "Les Maîtres de L'Affiche Imprimerie Chaix", which were avidly collected then and have continued to gain in popularity to the present.

Parmigiani Amica: An 18th Century Engraving and Etching by Strange After Mazzola
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an 18th century engraving and etching entitled "Parmigiani Amica" by Robert Strange after a painting by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, who lived during the Renaissance period. It was published in London in 1774. As the inscription states, the painting was in the collection of the King of Naples at the time the engraving was made. The engraving depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman, known as Parmigiani's Amica (meaning "female friend" in Italian). She is depicted wearing a simple but elegant dress with a low-cut neckline, which reveals her delicate features and graceful neck. Her hair is arranged in a simple yet stylish manner. She is turning to the right to look lovingly at her infant, which she is holding with her right arm. She is touching the baby's mouth with her left hand. The background of the engraving is plain and unadorned, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the subject of the portrait. The result is a beautiful and timeless image that captures the essence of Renaissance portraiture. The engraving is printed on watermarked paper. The sheet measures 16.25" high and 12' wide. The sheet is adhered to paper in its upper corners and it has been removed from the paper in its lower corners. There is some mild discoloration and some wrinkling in the margins, including the lower inscription area, and a small dark spot in the upper margin, which may represent a drop of ink occuring at the time of printing. These issues do not involve the image, which is in very good condition. The print is held by several museums and institutions, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The British Museum in London, The Royal Museums of the UK, The British National Trust...

Tom Sawyer Detective by Mark Twain: 19th C. Framed Colored Poster
By Edward Penfield
Located in Alamo, CA
This lithographic colored advertising poster entitled "Tom Sawyer Detective, A New Story by Mark Twain" was created by Edward Penfield in 1897 for Harper & Brothers. The artist's signature appears in the plate in the lower left. The poster depicts a man in a long black bathing suit sitting with his knees up, aimlessly smoking a cigarette, but looking out of the corner of his eyes at a woman in a olive green dress and tan blouse and a black hat, who sits to his left with her head propped in her left hand and a bored or concerned look on her face. The look on the faces of the couple creates an air of mystery. The title of the book is printed in red in the upper left and the issue "Harper's August" in bold letters in the lower poster. The poster promotes a new book by Mark Twain that was published initially in two issues of Harper's Monthly and also in book form by Harper & Brothers in 1896. It is a sequel to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", published in 1876, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", published in 1884, and "Tom Sawyer Abroad", also published in 1894. The plot of the book involves Tom Sawyer attempting to solve a mysterious murder. The story is told using the first-person narrative voice of his friend Huck Finn...
