About the Item

Giovanni Valle was a Venetian engraver and cartographer active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is best known for his geographical engravings and maps that contributed to the great cartographic movement in Venice at the time. His works are distinguished by topographical accuracy, geographic details, boundaries and viability. The proposed engraving depicts "The Polesine of Rovigo, the Duchy of Ferrara and the southern part of the Dogado," and was made using the etching technique. This is a work of remarkable precision and care, characterized by careful marking on all sides and in the map, facilitating orientation. The artist's name is given on the engraving itself in the lower left corner, "Di Giovanni Valle, Venice, 1793." The whole sheet measures 80.5x56 cm and the engraving 66x45 cm.The state of preservation is good.
