Death in Venice, Bridge of Sighs a Black and White Limited Edition Screenprint from an edition of 70.
It is called "Death in Venice" a Screenprint by one of Wales's most famous sons - John Piper (1903 - 1992)
The Death in Venice Suite was produced in 1973 and consists of 10 Screenprints, each an edition of 70, Signed and Numbered, printed on grand velin arches paper it is printed to the edges and size is 78cm by 68cm. We have double mounted and framed it and on the wall size is 98cm by 88cm.
Original screen print in colours on Grand Velin Arches wove paper. Signed John Piper in pencil lower right and numbered from the limited edition of 70 lower left. Printed by Kelpra Studios with their stamp to reverse and published by Malborough Fine Art Ltd. Referenced in Levinson, 224
A large and particularly striking rare John Piper print from his portfolio based on set designs for Death in Venice, a novella by Thomas Mann, set to opera by British composer Benjamin Britten with Myfanwy Piper, who wrote the libretto.
This print from a private collection purchased when first produced in the 70’s.
One of his most attractive and most collectable set of works.

Numbered 96/108 lower left and signed lower right, both in pencil. Printed by Piper and the screenprinter Chris Prater in 1987 after the original designs from 1942.
'Façade' was a sequence of poems written by the English poet Edith Sitwell. They were set to music by William Walton in 1922, four years after they were first written. 'Façade' premiered in 1923 in London, and was praised for its experimental modernist style. The choreographer Frederick Ashton made Façade into a ballet in 1931; Sitwell did not wish her poems to be included, but Walton's orchestral arrangements were used.
John Piper was commissioned as set designer for a 1942 performance of Facade. This lithograph is the design for the performance's curtain; the poetry and music of the performance were played behind the curtain, unseen by the audience. The Gothic house to the right was inspired by Eaton Hall...
