ABOUT THE ARTIST “I honor him for his realism. The man has feeling. He has that odd quality, so infinitely valuable, the feeling for things, for the reflected life in things.” —Sherwood Anderson, American novelist. Julius John (J.J.) Lankes (1884-1960) was a highly-regarded American illustrator, graphic artist, author, lecturer, costume scenery designer, and college professor. He is known primarily for his woodcut prints and his artistic collaboration with the poet Robert Frost, a friendship that spanned over forty years. Lankes was born in Buffalo, NY, to parents of German heritage and graduated from the Buffalo Commercial and Electro-Mechanical Institute in 1902. From 1908-1910 he studied at the Art Students League in Buffalo, NY, and from 1912-13 he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under Philip Leslie Hale and William McGregor Paxton. He also studied with artists Ernest Fosbery and Mary B.W. Coxe. Lankes made his first woodcut in 1917 and, over the course of his career, produced over 1,300 woodcuts. Lankes produced woodcuts to illustrate Robert Frost's poems as well as other notable authors and poets, including Ellen Glasgow’s ‘Barren Ground’ (1925), Roark Bradford’s ‘John Henry’ (1931), Sherwood Anderson’s ‘Perhaps Women’ (1931), Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Peter Tristram Coffin’s ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’ (1940), Beatrix Potter’s ‘Wag-By-Wall’ (1944) and August William Derleth’s ‘Country Poems’ (1956). He collaborated with his friend Charles Ephraim Burchfield to produce eleven woodcut designs based on Burchfield’s drawings. Lankes also published his own woodcuts, and how-to manuals, and authored articles in numerous magazines and publications. In 1930, Lankes and his Hilton Village neighbor Eager Wood of the Virginia Press collaborated on Virginia Woodcuts, a limited edition volume of 25 prints that featured and supported the preservation of the historic lands of Tidewater, Virginia. Lankes wrote and illustrated A Woodcut Manual, published by Henry Holt in 1932, the first definitive book on the woodcut printmaking medium in America. In 1933, Lankes was persuaded by Frost to accept a position as visiting Professor at Wells College in Aurora, New York. He taught at Wells for seven years. During the World War II years, he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, as head of technical illustration at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory, Langley, VA. Lankes’ art association memberships included the Society of American Graphic Artists, the American Artists Professional League, the Prairie Print Makers, the California Society of Print Makers, the Print Society of England, and the Saturday Sketch Club of Buffalo. In 1954 he was elected Academician Member at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Lankes maintained homes and studios in Gardenville, NY, and Hilton Village, Newport News, VA. The University of Richmond Museums mounted a one-person exhibition of the artist's work 'Julius J. Lankes, Survey of an American Artist,' November 12, 2013 – January 26, 2014. The Heritage Film Project sponsored a documentary on the artist’s life and work ‘J. J. Lankes, Yankee Printmaker in Virginia’ by writer-director Eduardo Montes-Bradley in 2019 (available on Vimeo). The College of William Mary, Musca-Relle Museum of Art mounted a one-person exhibit of Lankes’ graphic work in 2022. Lankes exhibited regularly during his career, and his works are held in many museums, public and private collections in the United States, Canada, and England, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia), Baltimore Museum of Art, The Burchfield Penney (Buffalo, NY), British Museum (London), Brooklyn Museum, Library of Congress, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Georgia Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Library of Virginia, University of Richmond Museums, Victoria Albert Museum (London), and Yale University. The 'Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Series' is at the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg. The 'Doremus Series', designed by Rockwell Kent and engraved by J.J.Lankes, is at Plattsburgh State University in New York.

ABOUT THE IMAGE Located in Kyoto, Chionin is the main temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism, one of the most popular Buddhist sects in Japan, having millions of followers. The Sanmon Gate, Chionin's entrance gate, standing 24 meters tall and 50 meters wide, it is the largest wooden temple gate in Japan and dates back to the early 1600s. Behind the gate, a broad set of stairs leads to the main temple grounds. ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter and printmaker Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Japanese 'shin hanga' (New Print) movement. Yoshida was born as the second son of Ueda Tsukane in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, a schoolteacher from an old samurai family. In 1891 he was adopted by his art teacher Yoshida Kasaburo in Fukuoka and took his surname. In 1893 he went to Kyoto to study painting, and the following year to Tokyo to join Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha private school; he also became a member of the Meiji Fine Arts Society. These institutions taught and advocated Western-style painting, greatly influencing Yoshida’s artistic development. In 1899 Yoshida had his first American exhibition at Detroit Museum of Art (now Detroit Institute of Art), making the first of many visits to the US and Europe. ABOUT THE ARTIST Howard Norton Cook (1901-1980) was one of the best-known of the second generation of artists who moved to Taos. A native of Massachusetts, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City and at the Woodstock Art Colony. Beginning his association with Taos in 1926, he became a resident of the community in the 1930s. During his career, he received two Guggenheim Fellowships and was elected an Academician in the National Academy of Design. He earned a national reputation as a painter, muralist, and printmaker. Cook’s work in the print mediums received acclaim early in his career with one-person exhibitions at the Denver Art Museum (1927) and the Museum of New Mexico (1928). He received numerous honors and awards over the years, including selection in best-of-the-year exhibitions sponsored by the American Institute of Graphics Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Society of American Etchers, and the Philadelphia Print Club. His first Guggenheim Fellowship took him to Taxco, Mexico in 1932 and 1933; his second in the following year enabled him to travel through the American South and Southwest. Cook painted murals for the Public Works of Art Project in 1933 and the Treasury Departments Art Program in 1935. The latter project, completed in Pittsburgh, received a Gold Medal from the Architectural League of New York. One of his most acclaimed commissions was a mural in the San Antonio Post Office in 1937. He and Barbara Latham settled in Talpa, south of Taos, in 1938 and remained there for over three decades.
