The edition exemplifies the technical mastery of the Mourlot atelier. About the Publication: Fauves, VII (Fauves, VII), published in 1972 by Fernand Mourlot, Paris, is the seventh folio in the landmark series dedicated to the Pierre Levy collection, one of the most important private holdings of twentieth century French art. Conceived as both a scholarly document and a visual compendium, the series sought to preserve and disseminate key works from the Fauvist and early modernist movements by translating major paintings into finely executed lithographs. Created in collaboration with Mourlot Freres—the preeminent lithographic workshop in France—the folio reflects the atelier’s longstanding commitment to capturing the tonal structure, chromatic nuance, and expressive vitality of early modern French painting. Issued in a single edition on Arches velin, the publication remains a vital contribution to the study and preservation of modernism, illuminating the continued relevance of these works within the broader history of twentieth century art and affirming the pivotal role of Pierre Levy’s collection in shaping its historiography. About the Artist: Maurice Marinot (1882–1960) was a groundbreaking French painter, draughtsman, and master glass artist whose fearless experimentation with form, color, and material placed him among the most influential creators of the early twentieth century, working within the same broad modernist landscape that produced Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. After early success as a Fauvist painter trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon, Marinot discovered glass in 1911 at the Viard glassworks and quickly revolutionized the medium by rejecting decorative norms and instead pioneering thick-walled blown forms, sculptural silhouettes, submerged bubbles, dramatic gradients, metallic lusters, and richly enameled surfaces that pushed glass into the realm of avant-garde fine art rather than traditional craft—a conceptual leap that anticipated the entire postwar studio-glass movement. Influenced by the expressive color of Matisse, the structural intelligence of Cezanne, and the material boldness of early modernism, Marinot forged a fiercely original visual language that profoundly shaped later glass innovators such as Dale Chihuly, Harvey Littleton, Lino Tagliapietra, Stanislav Libensky, and numerous contemporary sculptors exploring translucency, density, and emotional resonance. Widely exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and championed by critics for his unprecedented fusion of technique and imagination, Marinot saw his work enter major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, solidifying his legacy as a visionary who elevated glass to the level of painting and sculpture. Today, collectors prize his vessels for their jewel-like luminosity, sculptural weight, and dramatic presence, and the highest auction record for his work was set by a unique glass vase (circa 1925), which sold for 482500 USD at Christie’s New York on December 17, 2013.
