About the Item

Georges Duhamel, the L'Academie francaise, Grand Officier du Tastevin, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet at l'atelier Jacomet, Paris, November 17, 1956. About the Publication:
Vins, Fleurs et Flammes (Wines, Flowers, and Flames) was published in 1956 by M. Georges Duhamel, Grand Officier du Tastevin of the Academie francaise, as a celebratory homage to the literary and artistic culture of Burgundy and the French brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin. The edition, printed by Daniel Jacomet at his renowned Paris atelier, combined pochoir and lithographic processes to achieve the vivid texture and color modulation that defined Jacomet’s mastery in reproducing modern art. Conceived as a poetic and pictorial exploration of French viticulture, passion, and ritual, the volume united essays, drawings, and color plates by leading artists and writers. Each example was printed on luxurious grand velin d'Arches special paper and issued in multiple states, including copies featuring original watercolors and etchings by contemporary masters such as Uzelac and Bertin. The publication embodies the postwar revival of the fine art book in France—an intersection of literature, art, and craftsmanship that bridged the creative traditions of Parisian ateliers with the literary refinement of the Academie francaise. Its issuance at the Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy marked the symbolic union of French artistic and cultural heritage, celebrating the spiritual and sensual pleasures of creation.
About the Artist:
Max Jacob (1876–1944) was a French poet, painter, and critic whose visionary imagination, spiritual depth, and intellectual daring made him one of the defining figures of the early 20th-century Parisian avant-garde. A central link between Symbolism, Cubism, and Surrealism, Jacob bridged literature and visual art with a genius that profoundly influenced modernism. Born in Quimper, Brittany, he moved to Paris in 1894 and became a central member of the Bateau-Lavoir circle alongside Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, Georges Braque, and Amedeo Modigliani. His lifelong friendship with Picasso profoundly shaped both artists: Jacob provided the philosophical and mystical framework that fueled Cubism, while Picasso’s innovations inspired Jacob to experiment with the interplay of word and image. His 1917 literary masterpiece Le Cornet a des (The Dice Cup), illustrated by Picasso, introduced a radically new poetic language of fragmented imagery and dreamlike logic that prefigured Surrealism. As a painter, Jacob’s work combined Cubist geometry with Symbolist color and spiritual metaphor, translating emotion into rhythmic harmonies of shape and tone. Deeply influenced by the modernist revolution led by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he shared their belief in art as a metaphysical exploration of reality. Following a vision of Christ in 1915, Jacob converted from Judaism to Catholicism, and his subsequent poetry and painting became increasingly mystical, blending humor and holiness, intellect and transcendence. A mentor to younger writers such as Andre Breton and Paul Eluard, he anticipated the Surrealist movement and influenced generations of artists who sought to reconcile faith, intuition, and modern form. His interdisciplinary works—painted poems, watercolors, and illustrated manuscripts—blurred boundaries between art and text decades before conceptual art emerged. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 during the Nazi occupation of France, Jacob died at the Drancy internment camp, a tragic martyr to the creative and spiritual ideals he championed. Today, his works are held in the Centre Pompidou, Musee d’Orsay, and Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, and his writings remain central to modernist thought. Revered by contemporaries and later artists alike, Max Jacob stands among modern visionaries such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray as a poet-mystic whose art fused intellect, humor, and divinity into one radiant whole. The highest auction record for Max Jacob was achieved with Tete de femme, which sold for $58,000 USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on June 4, 2014, affirming his lasting legacy as one of the most imaginative and spiritually resonant figures in modern art.
