Paris Review (Lt. Ed. S/N) 1960s print by renowned Pop Artist abstract landscape

Allan D'Arcangelo
Paris Review, 1964-5
Silkscreen
32 × 26 inches
Signed and numbered from the limited Edition of 150
pencil signed, numbered and dated on the front
Unframed
Published by the Paris Review, Printed by Steven Poleskie at Chiron Press, New York
Allan D'Arcangelo created this work in 1964 as a benefit print for the eponymous Paris Review magazine which invited some of the most famous artists of the era to contribute. Over the next decade, D'Arcangelo would continue to receive significant recognition in the art world - exhibiting at Fischbach and then Marlborough Galleries in Manhattan. He was well known for his paintings of the iconic American highway, along with his depictions of desolate, industrial landscapes. In her essay "Ghost on the Highway: Allan D'arcangelo's Haunting Americana", Alice Bucknell writes, "A born-and-bred New Yorker, D’Arcangelo spent his due time trawling through the Bible Belt of the Deep South and the dizzying expanse of the Southwest desert as well as the more expected outposts of New York and L.A. Taking a particular favor to the way acrylic interacts with light — how it avoids the glistening sheen of oil, and how the flatness of the medium masks the presence of the artist’s hand — D’Arcangelo teases out complex ideas of the highway’s reality and representation, its rampant commercialization and maddening isolation, as well as escapism and entrapment as two split personalities of American infrastructure space through his signature flattening one-point perspective. “My most profound experiences of landscape were looking through the windshield,” D’Arcangelo explained to Marco Livingstone in the spring of 1988 while the two drove from New York City to the artist’s studio in upstate New York: an idiosyncratic interview included in the exhibition catalogue. “The sky, the tree line and the pavement all have the same quality, and it has to do with our separation from the natural world.” Far from the sugar...

Trees and Fields, Print Club of Cleveland
By Peter Takal
Located in Berlin, MD
“Trees and Fields” lithograph commissioned for the Print Club of Cleveland by Peter Takal
Peter Takal’s original lithograph “Trees and Fields” is an accomplished work of art created in 1957. This lithograph bears the stamp “The Print Club of Cleveland” on verso. This impression is signed by Takal in pencil. “Trees and Fields” is a fine example of the art created by the 20th century Romanian / German / American artist, Peter Takal.
Peter Takal: Born in Romania in 1905, Peter Takal spent most of his youth in Berlin and was mainly self-taught. His first one-man exhibition took place in the Gurlitt Gallery, Berlin, in 1932. During the following seven years his art was frequently exhibited at galleries in Berlin, Munich, Paris and as well as Casablanca and Algiers. At the beginning of the Second World War (1939), Peter Takal came to the United States for an exhibition of his art at the Katherine Kuhe Gallery, Chicago. He decided to remain in the United States and became an American citizen in 1944.
Living in New York, Peter Takal quickly established himself as a leading printmaker and a modern master of both lithography and drypoint engraving. One-man exhibitions of his art took place in New York City (1942), Chicago (1939 & 1941), Washington (1959) and Los Angeles (1966). International exhibitions of his art were held at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City (1959), the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Italy (1960) and at the Kestner-Museum in Germany (1962). Museums to date that include Peter Takal's original prints in their collections are, the Chicago Art Institute, the Library of Congress, Washington, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the United States State Department, UCLA, the Berlin National Museum and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Over the years, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Arkansas Arts Center have acquired a very extensive collection of Peter Takal's lithographs and drypoints. The artist died in 1995.
The Print Club of Cleveland: The Print Club of Cleveland is a non-profit adjunct organization and the country's first museum-affiliated print club devoted to the promotion of art and printmaking as a fine art for printmakers and collectors alike. With its creation in 1919, it has helped to support the growth of the department of prints and drawings at the Cleveland Museum of Fine Arts and has also been a source of great enrichment for collectors of fine prints. During the organizations long history, the club has annually commissioned one original etching engraving, lithograph, woodcut and or other form of original graphic art from such fine American artists as John Taylor Arms, Suzanne Anker, Luigi Lucioni, Will Barnet, Mark Tobey, Lyonel Feininger, Henry George Keller, Louis Lozowick, Karl Schrag, David Jansheski, Deborah Remington, and Peter Takal, as well as from leading international artists such as Henri Matisse, Edmund Blampied, Jean-Emile Laboureur, Salvador Dali, Michael di Cerbo, Phyliss Sloane, Paolo Boni, Juvenal Sanso...

Georges Braque, Two Black Birds, from Derriere le miroir, 1958 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Georges Braque (1882–1963), titled Deux oiseaux noirs (Two Black Birds), from the folio Derriere le miroir, No. 107–108–109, originates from the 1958 edition published by Maeght Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1958. The composition reflects Braques late poetic symbolism, where avian imagery, distilled form, and refined tonal balance merge into a lyrical meditation on nature and abstraction.
Executed as a lithograph on velin paper, this work measures 15 x 22 inches, with centerfold as issued. Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Mourlot Freres, Paris.

About the Publication:
Derriere le miroir (Behind the Mirror) was one of the most important art publications of the 20th century, created and published by Maeght Editeur in Paris from 1946 to 1982. Founded by the visionary art dealer and publisher Aime Maeght, the series served as both an exhibition catalogue and a work of art in its own right, uniting original lithographs by leading modern and contemporary artists with critical essays, poetry, and design of the highest quality. Printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and Arte, Derriere le miroir became synonymous with the artistic vanguard of postwar Europe. Each issue was devoted to a single artist or theme and published to accompany exhibitions at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Alexander Calder, Fernand Leger, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. The publication reflected Maeghts belief that art should be both accessible and elevated—an ideal realized through its luxurious production values, meticulous printing, and collaboration with the greatest creative minds of its time.
About the Artist:
Georges Braque (1882–1963) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose pioneering vision transformed the course of twentieth century art. A central figure in modernism and the co-founder of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso, Braque redefined visual perception by breaking objects into geometric forms and reassembling them from multiple perspectives, creating a new visual language that bridged the gap between abstraction and reality. His early work was influenced by the vibrant colors and expressive energy of the Fauvist painters Henri Matisse and Andre Derain, before evolving toward the more analytical and structured compositions inspired by Paul Cezannes theories of form and perspective. Braques collaboration with Picasso between 1908 and 1914 marked one of the most fertile and revolutionary periods in art history, resulting in works that challenged traditional notions of space, depth, and illusion. Throughout his career, Braque maintained a deep interest in harmony, rhythm, and balance, infusing his still lifes, landscapes, and later reliefs with poetic subtlety and intellectual rigor. He moved among a brilliant circle of contemporaries including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, and Amedeo Modigliani—artists united in their pursuit of new modes of artistic expression. Braques influence extended well beyond his own era, shaping the creative approaches of later modernists such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, all of whom drew inspiration from his structural innovations and aesthetic integrity. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate, and the Guggenheim, where they continue to embody the essence of modern artistic thought and visual poetry. The highest price ever paid for a Georges Braque artwork is approximately 15 million USD, achieved in 2013 at Christies New York for Paysage a la Ciotat (1907).

Max Eisler Eine Nachlese folio "Gastein" collotype
Located in Palm Beach, FL
After Gustav Klimt, Max Eisler Plate #21, Gastein; grey-green monochrome collotype after the 1917 painting in oil on canvas. Original destroyed by fire May 1945.
GUSTAV KLIMT EINE NACHLESE (GUSTAV KLIMT AN AFTERMATH), a portfolio of 30 collotypes prints, 15 are multi-color and 15 are monochrome, on chine colle paper laid down on heavy cream-wove paper with deckled edges; Max Eisler, Editor-Publisher; Osterreichischer Staatsdruckerei (Austrian State Printing Office), Printer; in a limited edition of 500 numbered examples of which: 200 were printed in German, 150 were printed in French and 150 were printed in English; Vienna, 1931.
2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Gustav Klimt’s death. It is a fitting time to reflect upon the enduring legacy and deep impact of his art. Recognizing this need for posterity with uncanny foresight, the publication of Gustav Klimt: An Aftermath (Eine Nachlese) provides a rare collection of work after Klimt which has proven to be an indispensable tool for Klimt scholarship as well as a source for pure visual delight.
Approximately 25 percent of the original works featured in the Aftermath portfolio have since been lost. Of those 30, six were destroyed by fire on 8 May 1945. On that fateful final day of WWII, the retreating Feldherrnhalle, a tank division of the German Army, set fire to the Schloss Immendorf which was a 16th century castle in Lower Austria used between 1942-1945 to store objects of art. All three of Klimt’s Faculty Paintings: Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence (1900-1907), originally created for the University of Vienna, were on premises at that time. Also among the inventory of Klimt paintings in storage there was art which had been confiscated by the Nazis. One of the most significant confiscated collections was the Lederer collection which featured many works by Gustav Klimt such as Girlfriends II and Garden Path with Chickens. In many instances, Aftermath is our only link to these lost treasures.
Max Eisler (1881-1937), the publisher of the 1931 Aftermath portfolio, was an art historian at Vienna University specializing in modern and contemporary arts and crafts whose 1920 book on Klimt was the first Klimt monograph. He saw An Aftermath as filling-in important gaps left by the earlier print portfolios which had only featured Klimt up to 1913 and which had glossed over major art projects such as the Tree of Life frieze for the Palais Stoclet. And whereas only 10 of the 50 prints from the earlier portfolios published by H.O. Miethke were made in intricate multi-color images, Eisler augmented the earlier format by featuring half of the 30 images in stunning multi-colored collotypes. Understanding the fragile nature of the collotype printing process also reinforces this project’s distinctive and exceptional characteristics. Fragile collotype plates can not be reused. As such, this necessitates the completion of a run on the first go and also dictates a limited production number. Printed by hand, the collotypes required deft handling by the printer, Osterreichische Staatsdruckerei. A complicated and lengthy process involving gelatin colloids mixed with dichromates, the creation of 16 color separation thin glass filters to achieve the light-sensitive internegative images which could faithfully capture all of the painting’s tonal gradations and colors, exposure to actinic light, and delicate chine collie papers which allowed for greater color saturation, the printer’s collaborative role in capturing and transmitting Klimt’s nuanced paint strokes is nothing short of remarkable.
The Österreichische Staatsdruckerei (Austrian State Printing Office), was the successor to the KK Hof -und Staatsdruckerei which was founded by Emperor Franz I in 1804 and whose collotype printing innovations of Klimt’s art...

About the Publication:
Pascin, published in Monte-Carlo in 1954 under the direction of Andre Sauret and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, stands as one of the most refined tributes to the artist’s oeuvre within the distinguished postwar series of French art albums. The album combines impeccable lithographic craftsmanship with scholarly presentation, highlighting the poetic subtlety and expressive line central to Pascin’s artistic legacy. Printed on grand velin Renage paper, the publication exemplifies the collaboration between Sauret and Mourlot that defined a generation of fine art editions, uniting artists, printers, and publishers dedicated to preserving the vitality of modern art in print. The album reflects the technical mastery of Mourlot’s atelier—celebrated for its work with Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, and Léger—while reinforcing Editions du livre’s commitment to producing luxurious, museum-quality publications that captured the spirit and emotion of twentieth-century masters. As a fine art album, Pascin occupies a central place among mid-century European art editions, representing both a celebration of the artist’s humanistic vision and a testament to the collaborative artistry that sustained modern printmaking.
About the Artist:
Jules Pascin (1885–1930) was a Bulgarian-born French painter and draftsman whose exquisite sensitivity, refined draftsmanship, and poetic vision made him one of the most evocative and influential figures of early modern art. Known as “the Prince of Montparnasse,” Pascin became a central figure of the Ecole de Paris and a defining presence in the bohemian world of early 20th-century Paris. Born Julius Mordecai Pincas in Vidin, Bulgaria, to a wealthy Sephardic Jewish family, he studied in Vienna and Munich before moving to Paris in 1905, where he quickly established himself among the leading modernists of his era, including Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall. Deeply influenced by Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Paul Cezanne, Pascin created paintings and drawings distinguished by their delicate lines, soft tonal harmonies, and psychological depth. His nudes, portraits, and scenes of Parisian cafe life radiate an atmosphere of quiet intimacy and emotional nuance, capturing the fragility and beauty of human existence. Unlike contemporaries such as Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, and Man Ray, who pushed toward abstraction and surrealism, Pascin remained devoted to figuration, exploring the subtleties of light, gesture, and emotion with unmatched tenderness. His works express sensuality without artifice, revealing the vulnerability and inner life of his subjects through line and color that seem to breathe with human feeling. His studio became a gathering place for artists and writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, and Anais Nin, who admired his introspection and his ability to translate psychological complexity into visual poetry. Though his life was marked by emotional turbulence and melancholy, his art radiated a timeless empathy that transcended style, influencing later artists including Balthus, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Egon Schiele, and Eric Fischl, who drew inspiration from his fusion of sensuality, sensitivity, and psychological depth. Today, his works are held in major institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Musee d’Orsay, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where they continue to resonate for their humanism and grace. Standing alongside Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Jules Pascin helped define the emotional vocabulary of modern painting, and his legacy endures as one of the most intimate and humanist voices of his century. The highest auction record for Jules Pascin was achieved by Portrait de jeune fille en robe rouge sur fond bleu (1928), which sold for $2,950,500 USD at Sotheby’s, New York, on May 8, 2008, confirming his enduring reputation as one of the most refined, psychologically profound, and collectible artists of modern art history.
