Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Aspen, CO. Engraved by German artist Johann Carl Richter (1759-c.1832) after a painting by French artist Pierre-Jacques Volaire (1729-1799). Comes from a series of etchings with aquatint of various scenes of Mount Vesuvius and other European landscapes, (1797). Printed in one color: brown. "5" inscribed in blue crayon upper left and "9" printed upper right. Our example here has its original rough hand-cut full margins with printed ornamental border as issued. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA together have five examples from this series within their permanent collections.
Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes forming the Campanian volcanic arc.
Biography:
Pierre-Jacques Volaire (1729-1799) was a French painter. He was born in Toulon as the son of the official city painter and writer and became the pupil of Claude Joseph Vernet. He was his assistant for eight years and known for landscapes and marines. He created paintings for English travelers on the Grand Tour. Volaire painted more than 30 scenes of Mt. Vesuvius, a popular natural attraction on the continent because it erupted periodically. He died in Naples.
