Georges Duhamel, Grand Officier du Tastevin of the Academie francaise, as a celebratory homage to the literary and artistic culture of Burgundy and the French brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin. The edition, printed by Daniel Jacomet at his renowned Paris atelier, combined pochoir and lithographic processes to achieve the vivid texture and color modulation that defined Jacomet’s mastery in reproducing modern art. Conceived as a poetic and pictorial exploration of French viticulture, passion, and ritual, the volume united essays, drawings, and color plates by leading artists and writers. Each example was printed on luxurious grand velin d'Arches special paper and issued in multiple states, including copies featuring original watercolors and etchings by contemporary masters such as Uzelac and Bertin. The publication embodies the postwar revival of the fine art book in France—an intersection of literature, art, and craftsmanship that bridged the creative traditions of Parisian ateliers with the literary refinement of the Academie francaise. Its issuance at the Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy marked the symbolic union of French artistic and cultural heritage, celebrating the spiritual and sensual pleasures of creation. About the Artist: Pierre-Yves Tremois (1921–2020) was a French painter, engraver, draftsman, and sculptor whose dazzling fusion of art, science, philosophy, and sensuality made him one of the most visionary and intellectually complex artists of the 20th century. A master draftsman trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Tremois devoted his life to exploring the eternal relationships between form and function, body and spirit, creation and destruction. His works—paintings, engravings, sculptures, and illustrations—embody a perfect balance between scientific precision and poetic imagination, revealing the harmony between biological structure and cosmic order. Deeply influenced by the modernist and surrealist giants of his era, including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Tremois blended their spirit of experimentation with his own scientific curiosity and sensual vision. His engravings, celebrated for their anatomical accuracy and exquisite line work, merged human and natural forms into metaphysical compositions where eroticism and intellect coexisted in delicate tension. In masterpieces such as Bestiaire Humain, Les Fleurs du Mal, and Les Amours de Psyche et de Cupidon, he reimagined the human figure as both organism and symbol, a microcosm of the universe’s infinite complexity. His collaboration with writers and philosophers, as well as his fascination with anatomy, biology, and astronomy, placed him at the intersection of art and science, making his oeuvre a profound meditation on knowledge and existence. Elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts in 1978 and later named its Doyen, Tremois exhibited internationally and gained particular acclaim in Japan, where his disciplined elegance and philosophical depth resonated deeply. His influence extends into contemporary art, inspiring artists such as HR Giger and others who explore the fusion of the mechanical and organic, intellect and desire. Standing among the great innovators of modern art—Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray—Pierre-Yves Tremois remains celebrated for his unmatched ability to merge technical mastery with metaphysical insight. His legacy endures in museums and collections worldwide, where his work continues to be revered as a bridge between the sensual and the scientific, the classical and the modern. The highest auction record for Pierre-Yves Tremois was achieved with Cheval, which sold for $63,000 USD at Sotheby’s, Paris, on December 6, 2007, confirming his enduring stature as one of France’s most intellectually and aesthetically profound artists of the 20th century.
