About the Item

Raul Anguiano (1915-2006) was an artist associated with the second wave of Mexican Muralists. This lithograph, Lime Kilns, was published in the Mexican Peoples Portfolio in 1947. Most of the subjects of that project were labor-related. Lime Kilns of course features men at work, with a horse, all of whom are doing heavy labor. They are dwarfed by the factory building at the middle left. Several columns of dark smoke rise from the ground to the sky, suggesting a polluted environment about which the workers can have no input or opinion. They just must get through the day to keep their jobs. Even the horse stands stoically. Another man, horse, and cart, are silhouetted at the top of the building. The giant rocks awaiting processing contribute to this dystopian landscape. Somehow it's a very 'big' image for about 11 x 14 inches. It's totally understandable that the artist also made murals. The print is signed in pencil at the lower right.
