About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Keening” is a surreal portrait of intense grief. This limited edition print is a 16 x 16 inch image printed with archival pigment ink and set with a white border on 18 x 18 inch museum-quality archival matte paper for matting and framing. The image is dominated by a powerful horse rearing towards the viewer at the forefront of a traditional open landscape, clouds billowing high in the vast sky. As one front leg pushes through an intricate spirographic torus at the center, the animal’s hind quarters are beginning to disintegrate. The horse has lost it's head to a magnificent flower vibrating with deep colors of red, brown, gold, and cyan, as it opens skyward in a mute cry. On it's back, the horse carries forms resembling a clutch of eggs. Chosen for the cover of a forthcoming book by the poet Maggie Dietz, this print is hand-signed and numbered. This limited edition print of 25 will ship flat.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
