About the Item

Distant Moon is a serigraph by the Hawaiian painter Seikichi Takara from 1991. The art is signed 'S Takara' lower right and numbered lower left. The image size is 24 x 36 inches and the framed size is 37 x 49 inches. Seikichi Takara’s Distant Moon is a luminous and serene seascape that captures the artist’s gift for transforming nature into pure atmosphere and emotion. In this striking 1991 serigraph, Takara presents a moonlit ocean in motion: waves cascade over dark rock formations, their edges glowing with soft spray and delicate highlights. The composition radiates calm even as the water surges, creating a dynamic balance between energy and tranquility. Rendered in Takara’s signature palette of layered blues and cool turquoise, the scene feels both expansive and intimate. The distant horizon glows under a pale, suspended moon, adding a quiet sense of mystery and depth. Takara’s mastery of tonal blending and fine textural detail gives the water a mesmerizing luminosity, its ripples and lines tracing patterns that guide the viewer’s eye through the entire composition. Distant Moon exemplifies why Takara is so admired for his ocean imagery: his ability to convey not only the look of the sea, but its rhythmic pulse and meditative presence. This is a work that brings the essence of Hawaiʻi into any interior—peaceful, atmospheric, and enduringly beautiful. A perfect acquisition for collectors of contemporary seascapes, Pacific art, or Takara’s sought-after editions. About the Artist: Seikichi Takara (b.1929) is a Hawaiian American painter and printmaker celebrated for his atmospheric blend of abstraction, gesture, and nature-inspired imagery. Born on Oʻahu to parents of Okinawan ancestry, he grew up within the culturally rich environment of mid-century Hawaiʻi, where his artistic talent emerged early. A supportive teacher helped arrange his first formal classes at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, complementing his largely self-directed development. Takara’s parallel work as a graphic artist and screen printer shaped his refined technical approach, particularly his mastery of layered color and luminous tonal transitions. By the 1960s he was exhibiting in Hawaiʻi, gaining recognition for works that merged abstract expressionist sensibilities with the moods and atmospheres of the islands. An early milestone came in 1968 when he received a public prize at the Hanalei Art Festival for his painting Erosion. His mature style is defined by translucent fields of blues, greens, and violets, animated by dynamic linear gestures that evoke natural forces—waves, mist, wind, or celestial movement—without depicting them literally. Whether in paintings or serigraph editions, Takara’s work offers a meditative vision of nature transformed through abstraction, making him a distinctive voice in Hawaiʻi’s post-war art landscape.

River of Mystery
Located in Greenwich, CT
River of Mystery is a serigraph on paper with an image size 8 x 15 inches, signed 'Ricker' lower right and annotated lower left. Framed in a contemporary gold-tone frame. Numbered XVII/L, from the edition of 500 (there were also 200 Arabic on paper, 200 Arabic on canvas and 50 AP on canvas). Framed in a contemporary silver-tone moulding. Ricker created four stunning images for a suite titled ‘Sacred Places’ – all powerful images of earthly splendor. The vistas he paints, almost desolate in a primeval way, are a chorus of voices that sing of the glory of nature. In a style which he calls ‘Epic Visionary,’ he presents a view that is at once new and fresh and yet as deep-rooted and enduring as the pristine landscapes themselves. In the images of ‘Sacred Places,’ Ricker’s harmonious layering and blending of colors, muted blues and greens, contrast with the jutting precipices and craggy outcrops of rock that punctuate each portrait. The effects of the elements are visible and beautiful, creating carved layers in the rock and earth, and weaving a ribbon of shimmering water as a central feature in each work. “…these places…are sacred places – they are sacred because their beauty is so deep and mysterious that we are stopped in our tracks…for the moment, we can’t imagine anything better on earth or in heaven.” – Bruce Ricker...
