Chester Cathedral - Drypoint Etching in Ink on Paper Dramatic drypoint etching by J. Alphege Brewer (British, 1881-1946). This composition shows the interior of Chester Cathedral in Brewer's characteristic style - highly detailed and with strong contrast. The scene encompasses the cathedral from floor to ceiling, capturing the immense size of the building. There are several people in the scene which contribute to the sense of scale. Signed by hand "J. Alphege Brewer" in the lower right corner. Titled "Chester Cathedral" in plate, lower left corner. Includes original card with artist's name. Presented in a new black mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 16"H x 12"W Paper size: 10.75"H x 7.75"W James Alphege Brewer was well known in the early 20th century as a producer of color etchings of European cathedrals and other scenes of church, college, and community. He was born July 24, 1881, in the Kensington section of London, England, the son of Henry W. Brewer, noted artist of historical architecture and prominent convert to the Catholic Church, and the grandson of John Sherren Brewer, Jr., “the brilliant editor of the Calendar of Letters of Henry VIII.” His great uncle was E. Cobham Brewer, the polymath who compiled Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. Among his older siblings were the artist Henry C. Brewer and the organist and writer John Francis Brewer. Brewer attended the Westminster School of Art in London, where his brother Henry also trained. In 1910, he married Florence Emma Lucas, an accomplished painter in oil and watercolor, whose father was the noted landscape artist George Lucas and whose great uncle was David Lucas, the famous engraver for John Constable. Florence's brothers Edwin and George assisted Brewer in the printing of Brewer's etchings. Brewer exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), at the Paris Salon of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and in the shows of the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA). He became an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1929 and a full member in the last two years of his life. He was also a member of the Hampstead Society of Artists, the Society of Graphic Art, and the Ealing Arts Club, where he was first Honorary Art Secretary and then Honorary Art Chairman. The print was created by Thomas Milton (1743-1827) from drawings by Luigi Mayer. This beautiful, detailed, original engraving is printed on deluxe J. Whatman paper with very wide left and right margins. There is a watermark "1801" indicating the year the paper was made. The sheet measures 11.25" high and 16" wide. Aegidius Sadeler or Aegidius Sadeler II[1] (1570–1629) was a Flemish engraver who was principally active at the Prague court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and his successors. Sadeler was born in Antwerp in the Sadeler family of print dealers and engravers. He was the son of Emmanuel de Sayeleer and the nephew of Aegidius I, Jan I en Raphael Sadeler.[2] He was trained by his uncle Jan I and became a member of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1589. He was active in Munich the next year in 1590, in Rome in 1593, in Naples and then again in Munich in 1594–1597. From 1597 he settled in Prague where he became court engraver for Rudolf II and made engraved portraits of notables and engravings after artworks there, most notably paintings by Bartholomeus Spranger, Roelant Savery, Hans von Aachen, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and sculptures by Giambologna and Adriaen de Vries. His early engravings were mostly faithful copies of works by Albrecht Dürer in the Imperial collection and copies of paintings by notable Italian painters such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Barocci and Titian or by Northern painters who worked there, such as Paul Bril and Denys Calvaert. Nr 82002. ____________________________________________________ He began his career in 1943 studying architecture at the University of Madrid, but in 1947 he dedicated himself to drawing and sculpture, and in 1948 he moved to Paris, then the world capital of the arts. Although he abandoned his studies, his work betrays his architectural training, showing an underlying sense of structural organization, as well as discipline in materials, planning of spatial relationships, and scale of elements. Over the years, the artist turned to materials that showed his investigations into conceptual questions and metaphysical concerns. Chillida's first stone and plaster creations oscillated between the human world and the natural world using figures and images of landscapes. Consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm, his works consider ways in which mass and volume contain space. His public works, which exist on a more massive scale, not only inhabit the space but also determine a qualifying space of their own. His monumental sculptures, designed for both urban and more secluded spaces, are permanently installed internationally and constitute an important facet of his artistic production. The main retrospectives of Chillida's graphic and sculptural work have been mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (1966); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979); National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1979); Guggenheim Museum (1980); Miramar Palace, San Sebastián (1992); and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999). This is an English translation of an excerpt from the original text in the atlas: "Frankenberg or, according to others, Francoburgum, a town in Hesse. Charlemagne vested the town of Frankenberg with many freedoms and privileges, which it still enjoys to this day, and on account of its valiant and victorious soldiers awarded a signet, upon which there formerly appeared a golden castle with a tower, together with the letter F and a golden crown. Frankenberg, seen here from the northeast, lies on a hill above the River Eder. The hillside is covered with fields neatly separated by bushes and fences. Soaring above the town is the massive Liebfrauenkirche, which was modelled on St Elizabeth's church in Marburg. Milton, who has said that his work is infused with a postmodern awareness of the past, has focused here in a deeply personal way on a segment of history that continues to haunt us all. The work, published in 1991, evokes one of the darkest periods of European history, the eroding and erasing of European culture under fascism, and the eventual total loss of humanity. The Train from Munich is an especially relevant and emotional work for Milton, who created the piece for his wife, Edith, who escaped Munich in 1939 as a child on the fabled Kinderstransport. The Kinderstransport was a desperate rescue effort on the part of the British government to save as many Jewish children as possible by railway before borders closed on the precipice of the Second World War. Children left their parents behind, and boarded the trains alone, leaving the impending doom of Nazi Germany, they arrived in Great Britain as refugees. More than 10,000 children escaped the holocaust via the Kinderstransport. In Train from Munich, the image itself holds an almost immeasurable amount of symbolism; each inch of the matrix is a successful effort to confront this history in a way that is poignant through a series of motifs. We see the Café disappearing into a ghostlike memory of the past, an allegory to the disintegration of culture, while through the windows we can see a rampant, snarling dog; a portrait of Hitler's shepherd, Blondi. Signed and numbered in ink. Edmund Blampied was a painter, etcher, lithographer and sculptor. Born in 1886 to a family of three boys in St. Martin, Jersey, Blampied became interested in drawing at an early age. After visiting the studio of John Helier Lander in 1899, Blampied decided to make a career as an artist. In 1903 he went to London to attend Lambeth Art School, where he studied etching under Walter Seymour. In 1905, he joined the Daily Chronicle as an artist. In that year he was awarded a scholarship to Bolt Court Scool of Photo-engraving and Lithography. In 1912 he left the Chronicle and established his own studio. He earned a living by illustrating novels and short stories. In 1913, he had his first exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in London. The following year he married Marianne Van Abbé. An engraving is a print made by incising lines into a metal plate with a sharp tool called a burin. After the image is drawn, the plate is inked, wiped clean, and then firmly pressed to paper so the ink remaining in the incised grooves is transferred. Considerable force is required to mark the metal, so the lines made by engraving tend to be stronger than those made through etching, and characterized by gentle tapering. Light and shade have to be created through cross-hatching since the technique is line-based.

Albrecht Dürer, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Francisco Goya are among the Old Masters admired for their engravings, but postwar and contemporary artists have made the most of the technique as well. 

Vija Celmins, for example, engraved wood to create her series of ocean surfaces, while Louise Bourgeois, who spoke about the symbolic power of engraving to convert aggression into something useful, revisited the medium throughout her long career. For Jasper Johns, recognized as one of the most innovative, masterful print artists of all time, printmaking was ideal for exploring the ideas of repetition, seriality, patterning, semiotics, order and symbolism that intrigued him. His crosshatch prints (and paintings, for that matter) are a wonderful reference to the engraving process but also a brilliant conceptual update of Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, which Johns subverted again and again.
