So, I wanted to try doing that with just using light instead of paints - however I soon started to see the similarities with Harold Edgerton’s famous atomic explosion photos and how the scale of my work could be switched between small items on a shelf to enormous atomic explosions. That is the reason behind the strange title ATO MIC - where the “ ” is a kind of link between larger and smaller scales, between the two influencing ideas.” – Mike G Jackson The images (from the ATO MIC series) may be reminiscent of the first milliseconds of atomic bomb explosions captured by Harold Edgerton's Rapatronic camera in the early 1950s but also visualise the thought of Maholy-Nagy’s bold visions in the Bauhaus’s movement toward the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or “total work of art.” The 3D concepts that were first expanded in the same art movement by El Lissitzky a hundred years ago, are also explored here by Jackson’s drowned thin line within the third of the image. In his vision, the line reflects a shelf with the object on top, by adding the weight to it, the gravity pushing them down. Or maybe the thin line is just the horizon, where the enormous atomic blast took place…? Beyond these flat forms of two dimensional ‘lumino-graphic’ works on paper, the purest form of photography (‘light drawing’) lays a visible path to three-dimensional imaginary world, realised in precise composition, rhythm and warm earthy tones of these works. City of Surprises is created from an original photograph taken from Greenwich Park. It features one of my favourite views of the London skyline - boasting some of the city’s most famous landmarks in a single line with one small difference - for legal reasons. The London Eye, Shard, BT Tower, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Cheesegrater are all there, alongside one building that I’ve been asked not to feature in my work by its lawyers. Can you spot it? I love the shapes of the view’s outline so I have replaced the building that shall not be named with the head of shark. The ‘new’ London skyline is then laser-cut into gold mirror. About the Artist: ALEX BOYD Alex Boyd's images represent a major addition to the tradition of modern landscape photography" – Robert Macfarlane, Author Alex Boyd is a landscape and documentary photographer, printmaker and writer. His work is primarily concerned with the Scottish landscape. As a photographer his work examines the role of early Scottish landscape photographers, often using antique processes such as the Victorian wet-plate collodion process using antique cameras in mountain environments. He is best known for his conceptual and figurative landscape photography which explores concepts of Scottish identity through historical and contemporary romanticism, neo-romanticism, Romantic nationalism and Spirit of Place. His work is largely concerned with depictions of the Celtic landscape, conservation and remote places, and is often characterised by its stark, poetic and introspective qualities. In 2019 he was awarded a Daiwa Foundation Scholarship to work and photograph the mountains of the Japan Alps centred on Mount Yari as well as shortlisted for the Hariban Award. He was the Mountain Photographer of the Year at the Kendal Mountain Festival in 2013, the UK’s largest mountain festival. His work on the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye as the Royal Scottish Academy’s artist in Residence is in several National Collections. His work has been widely exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at the Scottish Parliament, as well as group exhibitions at the Royal Academy, Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. His work is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, The Royal Photographic Society, the Royal Scottish Academy, the V&A in London and the Yale Centre for British Arts in the USA. His first book St Kilda – The Silent Islands was recently shortlisted for a Saltire Award. There are many structured stages to go through before the photographic paper can be hand developed and permanently fixed. Once Michael is happy with a finished Luminogram print it’s then toned in Selenium, which not only intensifies the prints tonality, but also increases the prints archival quality. Traditional photographic darkroom printing techniques have an unquestionable pedigree when it comes to the life expectancy of a photograph. Each Luminogram is unique and only one Silver Gelatin Print is produced of each image. The images reveal themselves with a 3D quality; viewed in the flesh the abstracted surreal forms within the paper come alive to the viewer.
