About the Item
Signed and titled and numbered by the artist, (23/69). Silkscreen print on handmade paper (from Bhutan).
Rec Chair is a vibrant color print by Frank Romero, a central figure of the Chicano Art movement and a founding member of the influential collective Los Four. Rendered in Romero’s signature bold palette and expressive brushwork, the composition centers on a simple wooden chair, transformed into a charged symbol through layered color, rhythmic mark-making, and dynamic surface texture.
The chair—an everyday object associated with domestic life and communal spaces—becomes a stand-in for presence, memory, and lived experience. Saturated reds and pinks dominate the field, while gestural strokes of yellow, black, and deep violet animate the surface, giving the image both emotional intensity and visual movement. Romero’s approach blends abstraction with recognizable form, reflecting his long-standing interest in the cultural poetry of ordinary objects.
Born in Los Angeles in 1941, Frank Romero played a pivotal role in bringing Chicano perspectives into contemporary American art. His work addresses identity, place, and social history, often drawing from urban landscapes and personal symbolism rooted in Mexican American life. Romero’s art is held in major museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Cheech Marin Collection.
This print exemplifies Romero’s ability to elevate the familiar into a powerful visual statement, balancing immediacy with cultural depth.
This print was featured in “Dreamland”, the first solo exhibition of a Chicano artist at MOLAA (Museum of Latin American Art). This is the first time the entire museum was dedicated to a single artist.

Frank Romero
Throughout his 40 year career as an artist, Frank Romero has been a dedicated member of the Los Angeles arts community. As a member of the 1970s Chicano art collective, Los Four, Romero and fellow artists Carlos Almaraz, Beto de la Rocha and Gilbert Lujan, helped to define and promote the new awareness of La Raza through murals, publications and exhibitions. Since then, Romero has successfully balanced a career in both the public and private arenas. He has completed More than 15 murals throughout Los Angeles, and was a key contributor to the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival with “Going to the Olympics,” a large scale mural which adorns one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways (Highway 101). "Corazón De Aztlán," a vibrant print by Chicano artist Frank Romero, encapsulates the complex interplay of cultural identity, love, and urban life. The artwork showcases a striking heart motif, layered with abstract shapes and colors that evoke the spirit of Aztlán, the mythical ancestral home of the Aztec people. Among the bold designs, a subtly hidden image of a car emerges, symbolizing the fusion of traditional heritage with modernity and the everyday experiences of Chicano life in urban settings. This duality reflects the artist's exploration of cultural pride, community, and the journey of self-discovery, making it a poignant representation of contemporary Chicano art.
