About the Item
This magnificent original lithographic poster from the Belle Époque era promotes the high-speed postal and passenger service operated jointly by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique and the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée) railway, linking Marseille, Algiers, and Tunis in just 24 hours.
The lush, orientalist composition shows a woman in traditional North African dress leaning on a shaded terrace overlooking Algiers. A fluttering banner, nautical signal flags, vibrant flora, and a vignette of a steamship at sunset complete the theatrical design—brimming with exotic allure and travel romance.
Hugo d’Alesi (1849–1906), born Frédéric Alexianu in Transylvania, was a French artist, architect, and master of chromolithography. Trained as an engineer, he brought precision and architectural clarity to his illustrations. D’Alesi was one of the most prolific poster artists of the late 19th century, working extensively for the French railway companies and shipping lines, including PLM and Cie Gle Transatlantique. His work is instantly recognizable for its dramatic vistas, vivid colors, and carefully composed depth.
He is also remembered for creating the Maréorama—an ambitious simulated voyage attraction presented at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, blending immersive visuals with engineering spectacle.
This poster is a prime example of d’Alesi’s talent for turning transportation into aspiration—offering not just a journey, but an invitation to dream.
A rare and historically significant piece, ideal for collectors of vintage travel posters, maritime heritage, and colonial-era ephemera.
