About the Item
Iconic blue racer, Jack Vettriano’s image of this car are among his mist popular subjects. ‘Birth of a Dream’ was originally painted in 2000, the millennial year of hope and progress. This art poster was printed for Portland Gallery, London a well known venue for Vettriano’s exhibited work. The title and date of the original painting are printed at the bottom.
In this image a man stands looking at the blue beauty of a car, paintbrush still in hand and cigarette in the other hand. He wears the classic Vettriano 1930s suspenders. True to fantasy, he wears a white dress shirt with splattered blue paint on his sleeves. The word ‘ Bird’ for the car’s name Blue Bird, is visible painted on the car, right of the man’s sleeve.
As always with Vettriano, it is not the practicality or details that matter as much as the narrative. Rolled up sleeves are the only nod to a working man painting a vehicle. The title gives us the hint: this is the moment the dream comes alive, after the final brushstroke the celebratory cigarette is lit while admiring the completed work. Perfect for the millennial year 2000!
This art poster is in near mint condition, one of a collection of ten Vettriano art posters.
The overall poster size is 23.25” by 31”, and the painting image is 18.5” by 19.5”. It is a bright off white poster background. The printed name Jack Vettriano is dark blue and Portland Gallery is grey. In fine print at the bottom are further details that could be covered when framed. Copyright by art group, printed in England on the left and ‘Birth of a Dream’ copyright Jack Vettriano 2000. Courtesy of Portland Gallery London 20299 on the right.

Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano, born Jack Hoggan on November 17, 1951, in Fife, Scotland, is a renowned contemporary Scottish painter. He grew up in a working-class family and left school at 16 to become an apprentice mining engineer. His journey into art began at the age of 21 when his girlfriend gifted him a set of watercolor paints. Vettriano taught himself to paint by studying books and replicating their techniques. Initially signing his works as "Jack Hoggan," he adopted his mother’s maiden name, Vettriano, in the late 1980s. His career took a significant turn in 1989 when he submitted two pieces to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition, both of which sold on the first day. This success led to more exhibitions and the subsequent rise in his popularity. Vettriano’s style is often characterized by its narrative and cinematic quality, frequently depicting scenes of romance, mystery, and noir glamour. His most famous work, "The Singing Butler" (1992), captures a couple dancing on a stormy beach, and it became one of the best-selling art prints in the UK. Despite commercial success, Vettriano has faced criticism from some art critics who regard his work as populist.

"Inside of a House in Nootka Sound" (Canada) from Captain Cook
s 3rd Voyage
By John Webber
Located in Alamo, CA
"The Inside of a House in Nootka Sound" is an engraving created by William Sharp (1749-1824), from a drawing by John Webber (1752-1793), who was the artist on Captain James Cook's 3rd and final voyage of discovery. It is Plate 65 in "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere", the official British Admirality sanctioned journal published upon completion of the voyage in London in 1784 by Strahan & Cadell.
This engraving is presented in a Koa wood frame and a white mat. There are occasional tiny faint spots, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. Koa wood is legendary in Hawaii. Not only is this amazing wood native to Hawaii, but it is known for the deep rich colors and varied grain pattern. Koa has an honored heritage in Hawaii and is highly revered and sacred. The word “koa” means “warrior” in Hawaiian. The warriors of King Kamehameha the Great, created canoes and weapons from a wood plentiful on the Big Island of Hawaii. This wood became synonymous with the warriors themselves, and it became known as koa.
There are three other engravings listed form the official journal of Captain Cook's 3rd voyage available that are presented in identical Koa wood frames and mats. They would make a wonderful grouping for a display of 2, 3 or 4 prints. Please see listings: LU117324682432, LU117324684022, LU117324684062. A discount is available for a grouping depending on the number of items included.
Nootka Sound is on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It was explored by Captain Cook in 1778 after he discovered Hawaii during his 3rd voyage. He originally named it King George's Sound, but did record Nootka Sound, which he thought was its native name. Hawaii was originally called The Sandwich Islands in honor of The Earl of...
