The American Red Cross Carries on Join!
Newell Convers Wyeth, better known as "N.C. Wyeth," was the patriarch of the famous Wyeth family of artists, and provided illustrations for such classics as Kidnapped, Treasure Island, and Last of the Mohicans. N.C. Wyeth's work for the American Red Cross consisted of seven illustrations for The Red Cross Magazine, 1918-19, and a memorable poster produced for the 1933 Roll Call, The American Red Cross Carries On . . . Join!.
The dramatic beauty of the billowing flags stimulated much-needed support for the relief services provided by the American Red Cross during the height of the Great Depression. A prolonged drought produced the "dust bowl" in the heartland of our country. Over 3,2000 Red Cross chapters responded by assisting the federal government in distributing 85 million bushels of wheat and 80 million bags of flour to nearly 6 million families. Boxes of seeds for planting were also given to impoverished farmers, an important element in the organization's drive to make the drought sufferers self-sufficient again.
