N.B. Original Print, handmade and hand printed etching. An old friend of mine, Brodie the Scottish Terrier. He was a regular at the shows and a wonderful character.
Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. I am really excited by composition, by artists like Bonnard and Leon Spilliaert...

Anatomy of the Dragon Arum
Anatomy of the Queen Flower 1804 by Dr. R.Thornton
Located in Paonia, CO
Anatomy of the Dragon Arum & Anatomy of the Queen Flower 1804 by Dr. Robert Thornton from A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus by Thornton [The Genera of Exotic and Indigenous Plants that are to be met with in Great Britain; arranged according to the reformed system, by Thornton] The Temple of Flora 1787-1810. An offshoot of his larger masterpiece of the same title, Thornton attempted to explain Linnaean botany, as well as expound upon his own botanical theories. The work celebrates great contemporary and historical botanists and their supporters and also includes plates of many cross-sections of plant stems. Cf. Nissen BBI 1955. Both the Anatomy of the Dragon Arum and the Anatomy of the Queen flower are illustrated by Peter Charles Henderson . They are in good condition with a few small marginal tears repaired at edges and minor age appropriate foxing. These prints are professionally and beautifully hand colored.
Dr. Robert John Thornton ( 1768 -1837 ) was an English physician and botanical writer and a member of the University of Cambridge and the Royal London College of Physicians. He had a great love of botany and is best known for the his dramatic large folio plates of The Temple of Flora published in 1799. Complete volumes and even individual prints of The Temple of Flora are rare and found in the rare book rooms...

Nepeta Racemosa (Catmint)
By Sydenham Edwards
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
An original hand colored copper plate engraving by British artist Sydenham Edwards (1768-1819) titled "Catmint", 1806. Text engraved at bottom: Syd. Edwards del. Published by T. Curtis, St. Geo Crefcent April 1, 1806. F. Sanform sculpt. Beautifully framed with moulding from Spain. Framed size: 14.5" x 11.5". Image size: 7.5" x 4.5". Excellent condition.
Nepeta racemosa (dwarf catmint or raceme catnip), syn. N. mussiniii, is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, native to the Caucasus, Turkey and northern Iran. Growing to 30 cm (12 in) tall by 45 cm (18 in) wide, it is a herbaceous perennial with aromatic leaves and violet or lilac-blue flowers in summer.
Sydenham Teast Edwards (1768 – 8 February 1819) was a natural history illustrator. Edwards was born in 1768 in Usk, Monmouthshire, the son of Lloyd Pittell Edwards, a schoolmaster and organist, and his wife, Mary Reese, who had been married on 26 September 1765 at Llantilio Crossenny Church and where Sydenham was christened in 1768. Mary Reese was a sister of the Rev. William Reece, the curate of Llantilio Crossenny who had married Ann Mackafee. Their son, Richard Reece was an eminent physician and wrote a number of works on medicine. Young Edwards had a precocious talent for draughtsmanship and when only 11 years old had copied plates from Flora Londinensis for his own enjoyment. A certain Mr. Denman visited Abergavenny in 1779 and saw some of Edwards' work. Denman, being a friend of William Curtis, the publisher of botanical works, and founder of the Curtis's Botanical Magazine, spoke to Curtis about the boy. Curtis proceeded to have Edwards trained in both botany and botanical illustration.
Edwards produced plates at a prodigious rate: between 1787 and 1815 he produced over 1,700 watercolours for the Botanical Magazine alone. He illustrated Cynographica Britannica 1800 (an encyclopaedic compendium of dog breeds in Britain), New Botanic...
