About the Item
This 1978 original exhibition poster by Raoul Ubac, created for Galerie Maeght, encapsulates the artist’s unique position at the crossroads of Surrealism and post-war abstraction. Printed by Arte Adrien Maeght in Paris, the piece serves as both a promotional tool and a standalone artwork, representative of the gallery’s long-standing commitment to avant-garde and modern art.
The design features a geometric, almost sculptural form composed of interlocking horizontal bands in muted reds, greys, and deep blacks. The sharply angular motif suggests a folded architectural structure or a shield-like emblem, playing with perspective and depth in a way that echoes Ubac's interest in form, matter, and metamorphosis. The deliberate asymmetry and layered effect evoke movement and compression, anchoring the work in Ubac’s broader practice of exploring tensions between the organic and the abstract.
A leading figure in the mid-century European art scene, Ubac (1910–1985) was not only a painter but also a poet, photographer, and sculptor. His collaborations with Surrealist circles and post-war galleries like Maeght marked him as a deeply intellectual artist, continuously pushing the boundaries of texture and visual language. His work often involved processes of transformation—eroded surfaces, reliefs, and burned images—which gave materiality to abstract thought.
This poster not only advertised an exhibition but captured the essence of Ubac’s practice. Galerie Maeght, known for championing artists like Miró, Giacometti, and Chagall, frequently collaborated with Ubac, recognizing in his work a poetic rigor that aligned with the gallery’s aesthetic mission.
Today, the poster stands as a collectible piece of graphic design and mid-century art history—an artifact of Ubac’s visual philosophy and the rich cultural fabric of Galerie Maeght’s programming in the 1970s.

Raoul Ubac
Born in 1910, Raoul Ubac is an artist from the New Ecole in Paris. Raoul Ubac spent his early childhood in Germany (Prussia) between Cologne and Frankfurt. He returned to Paris in 1930 and enrolled in the Sorbonne. Then he met André Breton and frequented the surrealists and artists of Montparnasse. He undertook numerous trips across Europe and photographed the island of Hvar (now Croatia) of found stone assemblies. Then, on the advice of Otto Freundlich, German painter and sculptor, he enrolled in the School of Applied Arts where he worked in drawing and photography.First of all, he is most interested in photography and is experimenting with processes of burning, solarization and petrification. He participated in the activities of the surrealists and exhibited under the pseudonym of Raoul Michelet at the Exposition Internationale du Surreéalisme in 1935, the first surrealist exhibition taking place in Belgium. From 1936 he learned engraving in the studio of artist Stanley William Hayter and began to make photomontages. In 1970 he founded the magazine «L'invention collective» with René Magritte and then collaborated in the magazine «Messages» where he met Raymond Queneau and Paul Eluard. After the war, he gradually moved away from surrealism and abandoned photography. Raoul Ubac then embarks on drawing with a pen to create to launch himself in drawing with a feather and then engraving on slate to make gouaches, and ends up approaching the painting with an egg.He paints on panels covered with amalgamated resins which constitute a synthesis of his work and his research, dealing with the themes of bodies and furrows, subjects of predilection until his death. In 1968 a retrospective of his work was presented in Brussels and at the Musée d'art moderne in Paris. Raoul Ubac received the Grand Prix national des arts in 1973. He was responsible for several sets of stained glass windows as well as reliefs, high reliefs, wall decorations and models of tapestries for public and private buildings. He has also illustrated with his drawings, engravings and lithographs some thirty books and is the author of the cover of the journal «Argile» published by Maeght from 1973 to 1981. Ubac’s works are part of many collections of museums in France and Europe. In 1980, the French Post Office issued a stamp reproducing one of its creations. Raoul Ubac died on March 24, 1985.

1982 vintage poster by Razzia for the Paris Posters exhibition
By Razzia (Gérard Courbouleix–Dénériaz)
Located in PARIS, FR
This striking 1982 vintage poster, designed by Razzia, was created to promote the Paris Posters exhibition at the Musée de l’Affiche et de la Publicité during the summer (Été 82). Featuring a bold and graphic collage-style composition, the artwork embodies the dynamic energy of 1980s design.
Razzia, a renowned French graphic artist, is celebrated for his iconic Art Deco-inspired poster designs with a modern twist. In this piece, he juxtaposes a stylized black-and-white Eiffel Tower, a monochrome portrait of a woman, and an accordion transformed into the Arc de Triomphe, all set against a dramatic black background with vivid color accents.
The use of cutout-style imagery and neon-inspired typography reflects the postmodern aesthetic of the early 1980s, capturing the bold creativity of the era. The vibrant contrast of yellow, red, and blue highlights adds to the poster’s visual impact, making it a standout example of contemporary French graphic design.
