Maurice Denis was born the son of a railway official. In 1871, the family moved to Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1888, he attended the Académie Julian in Paris, where Paul Sérusier convinced him of the painting style of the Pont-Aven school. In 1890, he exhibited for the first time (with the painting "The Choir Boy") at the Salon and published his first theoretical article in the magazine Art et Critique. He was a founding member of the Les Nabis group of artists, along with Pierre Bonnard, Paul Sérusier, and Édouard Vuillard; he shared a studio with Bonnard and Vuillard. In 1891, he took part in the Nabis exhibition at the Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville. Denis is considered the most important theorist of this group.
During his travels in Italy between 1890 and 1895, he studied the works of the Renaissance, particularly those of Piero della Francesca. In 1903, Ambroise Vollard published his 216 woodcuts on the imitation of Christ and, in 1911, the edition of Paul Verlaine's Sagesse, which he illustrated. Further travels followed, including to Moscow (1909), Algeria and Tunisia (1921), Palestine, Greece (1924), and the United States and Canada (1927).
His students included the Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka and the British-Italian painter Daphne Maugham-Casorati.
Denis created paintings with simple forms, gently curved lines, and pale colors. His works include murals, panel paintings, and prints, as well as book illustrations. From 1919 onwards, he focused primarily on reviving religious art and founded the Ateliers d'art sacré with Georges Desvallières (1861–1950). In 1920, he created the altar mosaic in the basilica of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice in the Swiss canton of Valais. It depicts the coronation of St. Maurice. Denis became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1932, succeeding Jean-Louis Forain.
In 1937, his color lithographs Mädchen vor blühenden Kastanien (Girls in Front of Blooming Chestnut Trees) and Ce fut un religieux mystère (It Was a Religious Mystery) were confiscated from the Museum Folkwang Essen as part of the Nazi campaign against "degenerate art." Both works were sent to art dealers Hildebrand Gurlitt and Bernhard A. Böhmer, respectively, to be "exploited" on the art market. Their whereabouts are unknown.
In 1943, Maurice Denis died as a result of a car accident.

Maurice Denis
Painter, engraver and decorator, Maurice Denis. French artist, born in November 1870 in Granville in Normandy and died in November 1943. He studied at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, then simultaneously at the École des beaux-arts and at the Académie Julien.
However, Denis did not recognize himself in the naturalist style promoted by his teachers, so he formed Les Nabis with other artists such as Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard and Paul Elie Ranson. This group and artistic movement claims symbolism, partly inspired by Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard. Denis and the Nabis have a characteristic style which consists of the application of large areas of paint and the use of radical and unusual colors. Denis is a very productive painter. He exhibited numerous works alongside those of other Symbolists and Neo-Impressionists during the 1890s. A characteristic work of this period is Spring (1897) which is now part of the permanent collection of the Met in New York. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Denis exhibited his work regularly, both at the Salon de la Société Nationale and at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1914, he purchased and began the restoration of a 17th century priory in Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris. In 1980, the priory was transformed into a museum, dedicated to the works of Denis and more generally to the Nabi movement. The priory is renamed the Priory Departmental Museum. Denis' works have also been exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England.
