About the Item

This rare lithographic poster is steeped in history. in 1949, author Louis Aragon (1897-1982) chose Picasso's lithograph "La Colombe" (The Dove) for posters commemorating the first peace conference in Paris. A dove was appropriate, already a symbol of tranquility, and Picasso's unique take on the bird was joyfully received. Picasso's dove caught on and in the years that followed the artist agreed to provide more for peace conferences across Europe, including this 1962 edition. The image of the dove became a phenomenon around the world. Between 1949 and the artist's death, he created numerous works, including posters, prints and drawings, which depicted the Dove of Peace. Variations of the image were used for Peace Congresses in Wroclaw, Stockholm, Sheffield, Vienna, Rome and Moscow. Images were distributed around the world by the Peace Movement, creating new momentum for the artist's reputation. This is a beautiful example of this series. For Picasso, the dove was both an important political symbol and a personal one. His father had taught him his early skills as an artist. He had drawn doves in his childhood home in Málaga in the 1880s. Ref. Czwiklitzer #207 Ed. 4,000 (most were glued to walls of the cities and therefore destroyed) If for any reason you are not happy with your order, return it to us within 30 days for replacement or a credit towards exchange.
