Pablo Picasso, The Child with the Doll, from Chroniques du Jour, 1930 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph and pochoir after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled L’Enfant a l’ange (The Child with the Doll), from the album, Pablo Picasso, 1930, originates from the 1930 edition published by Editions des Chroniques du Jour, Paris, and printed by L'Atelier Desjobert, Paris, 1930. L’Enfant a l’ange (The Child with the Angel) exemplifies Picasso’s exploration of mythological and spiritual imagery during the early 1930s—a period in which he synthesized the formal innovations of Cubism with the poetic lyricism of his neoclassical and Surrealist phases. Through the delicate layering of lithographic line and pochoir color, the work evokes both innocence and transcendence, merging classical grace with modern expressiveness in a composition that feels simultaneously intimate and monumental. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 11.38 x 9.09 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Editions des Chroniques du Jour and the technical excellence of L'Atelier Desjobert, one of the premier Parisian workshops specializing in pochoir and fine art lithography. Artwork Details: Artist: After Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: L’Enfant a l’ange (The Child with the Doll), from the album, Pablo Picasso, 1930 Medium: Lithograph and pochoir on velin paper Dimensions: 11.38 x 9.09 inches (28.9 x 23.1 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1930 Publisher: Editions des Chroniques du Jour, Paris Printer: L'Atelier Desjobert, Paris Catalogue raisonne references: Cramer, Patrick. Kornfeld & Klipstein, 1968, illustration 98; Reusse, Gerhard. Pablo Picasso: The Illustrated Books, Catalogue Raisonne. Verlag Gerd Hatje, 1983, illustration 31 Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the album, Pablo Picasso, published by Editions des Chroniques du Jour, Paris, and printed by L'Atelier Desjobert, Paris, 1930 Notes: Excerpted from the album, This volume has been printed in MCC numbered examples, of which DL (LI to DC) constitute the edition in French and DCL (DCI to MCCL). The edition in English has been printed on behalf of E. Weyhe, 794 Lexington Avenue, New York (DCI to MC) and of A. Zwemmer, 78 Charing Cross Road, London, W. C.2. (MCI to MCCL). There have also been printed L examples on Arches paper with a lithograph by Picasso (I to L) distributed between the two editions, and some press examples. About the Publication: The album Pablo Picasso, published in 1930 by Editions des Chroniques du Jour, Paris, under the direction of Christian Zervos, stands among the earliest major printed tributes to the artist’s emerging international acclaim. Conceived as part of the publisher’s broader initiative to document and celebrate the modernist vanguard, the volume presented a series of lithographs and pochoirs interpreting Picasso’s drawings, watercolors, and gouaches from the preceding decade. Executed at the esteemed Atelier Desjobert, the edition combined the lithographic precision of line with the pochoir method’s hand-applied color, producing images of exceptional tonal depth and fidelity. Issued in both French and English, with distribution in Paris, New York, and London through E. Weyhe and A. Zwemmer, the album was limited to MCC copies, including a special suite of L examples on Arches paper containing an original lithograph by Picasso. The publication represented a vital collaboration between artist, publisher, and printer—uniting the intellectual rigor of Zervos’s art criticism with the material beauty of fine French printmaking. Today, Pablo Picasso, 1930 is recognized as a landmark in 20th-century art publishing, reflecting both the refinement of interwar Parisian craftsmanship and the international reach of Picasso’s genius. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso's career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) achieved a record-breaking sale of 179,365,000 USD at Christie's, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso's enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history. Church with Star – Artist s Personal Letterhead, Bauhaus Modernism
Located in Myrtle Beach, SC
Lyonel Feininger, 'Church with Star (Kirche mit Stern)', woodcut, 1936, one of a small but unknown number of letterhead proofs; Prasse W265. Annotated 'W 265' (Feininger catalogue number) and inventory no. '2808' in pencil, in the bottom right sheet corner. A fine impression, on cream, laid letterhead stock; hinge remains on the left and right top sheet edges, verso, in excellent condition. Very scarce. Image size 2 3/8 x 2 3/8 inches; sheet size 10 1/16 x 7 1/16 inches. Archivally sleeved, unmatted. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was born in New York City into a musical family—his father was a violinist and composer, his mother was a singer and pianist. He studied violin with his father, and by the age of 12, he was performing in public, but he also drew incessantly, most notably the steamboats and sailing ships on the Hudson and East Rivers, and the landscape around Sharon, Conn., where he spent time on a farm owned by a family friend. At the age of 16 he left New York to study music and art in Germany, from where his parents emigrated. Drawn more to the visual arts, he attended schools in Hamburg, Berlin, and Paris from 1887 to 1892. After completing his studies, Feininger began his artistic career as a cartoonist and illustrator, his originality leading him to great success. In 1906, after working for a dozen years in Germany, he was offered a job as a cartoonist at the Chicago Tribune, the largest circulation newspaper in the Midwest. He worked there for a year, inventing what became the standard design for the comic strip: in the words of John Carlin, “an overall pattern. . . that allowed the page to be read both as a series of elements one after the other, like language and as a group of juxtaposed images, like visual art.” His originality did not end there: he went on to become one of the great abstract painters. Like Kandinsky, music was his model, but Kandinsky only knew music from the outside—as a listener (inspired initially by Wagner, then by Schoenberg)—while Feininger knew it from the inside. He lived in Paris from 1906 to 1908, during which time he met and was influenced by the work of progressive painters Robert Delaunay and Jules Pascin, as well as that of Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. He began painting full-time, developing his distinctive Iyrical style based on Cubist and Expressionist idioms and a concern for the emotive qualities of light and color. He exhibited with the Der Blaue Reiter group in 1913, and in 1917, he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin. One year after his solo exhibition, in 1918, Feininger began making woodcuts. He became enamored with the medium, producing an impressive 117 in his first year of exploring the printmaking medium. In 1919 at the invitation of the architect Walter Gropius, he was appointed the first master at the newly formed Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar. His woodcut of a cathedral crowned...

Fernand Leger, Head and Leaf, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1939
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Fernand Leger (1881–1955), titled Tete et Feuille (Head and Leaf), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. II, No. 5–6, originates from the 1939 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1939. This striking composition epitomizes Leger’s distinct synthesis of mechanical precision and organic vitality. Tete et Feuille demonstrates his fascination with the interplay between geometry and the human figure—translating natural forms into bold, dynamic arrangements of line and color. The juxtaposition of the stylized head and leaf form reveals Leger’s mastery in uniting abstraction with humanism, a hallmark of his mature modernist vision. Through rhythmic design and rich tonal contrast, the work captures the harmony between nature and the machine age that defined much of Leger’s career. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition reflects the exceptional quality of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the foremost modern masters of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Fernand Leger (1881–1955) Title: Tete et Feuille (Head and Leaf), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. II, No. 5–6, 1939 Medium: Lithograph on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm) Inscription: Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued Date: 1939 Publisher: Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. II, No. 5–6, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1939 About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a union of art and literature, Verve featured original lithographs and writings by the foremost artists and thinkers of its time, including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, and Fernand Leger. Each issue represented a collaboration between artists, poets, and master printers, notably Mourlot Freres, whose exceptional craftsmanship brought color lithography to new aesthetic heights. The 1939 double issue, Vol. II, No. 5–6, is among the most distinguished editions, reflecting both the intellectual vigor and artistic experimentation that defined the pre-war Parisian avant-garde. About the Artist: Fernand Leger (1881–1955) was a visionary French painter, sculptor, designer, and filmmaker whose groundbreaking fusion of modern industry, vivid color, and geometric form transformed the course of 20th-century art. Born in Argentan, Normandy, Leger began as an architectural draftsman before studying at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he absorbed the lessons of Paul Cezanne’s structural rigor and the revolutionary ideas of Cubism. Alongside Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, he became one of the leading innovators of the avant-garde, yet his work stood apart through its embrace of mechanical rhythm, bold contrasts, and industrial modernity—earning him the title “the painter of the machine age.” His art celebrated the beauty of technology, urban life, and the human form rendered in dynamic, interlocking cylinders and planes, evoking the pulse of the modern world. Immersed in the vibrant Parisian art scene, Leger worked in dialogue with peers and contemporaries such as Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, all of whom shared his commitment to innovation and the reimagining of artistic expression. Beyond painting, Leger’s creative reach extended into film, design, and monumental public art—his 1924 collaboration on Ballet Mecanique with Dudley Murphy and Man Ray remains a landmark of avant-garde cinema. His later works evolved toward greater clarity and monumentality, celebrating the unity of form, color, and humanity through large-scale murals and mosaics that bridged fine art and architecture. Leger’s synthesis of Cubism, Futurism, and abstraction paved the way for movements such as Pop Art and influenced generations of artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, and Alexander Calder, who admired his fusion of structure, energy, and optimism. Today, his works are prized by major museums and collectors worldwide for their bold visual power and enduring modernity. His highest auction record was achieved by La femme en rouge et vert (1914), which sold for $39,241,000 at Sotheby’s, New York, on May 7, 2008. 1939 Original planisphere poster by Lucien Boucher “Nova et Vetera” Air France
Located in PARIS, FR
The 1939 original planisphere poster by Lucien Boucher, titled “Nova et Vetera”, is an exquisite work commissioned by Air France, blending art and cartography to celebrate both the past and future of air travel. Boucher, known for his iconic map designs, produced this piece at the onset of World War II, a period where air travel was rapidly evolving, and Air France was positioning itself as a leader in global aviation. “Nova et Vetera”, which translates from Latin to "New and Old," captures the transition between the old world of sea-bound exploration and the new age of air travel. This juxtaposition is represented in the map’s composition, featuring routes that stretch across continents, symbolizing the vast reach of Air France’s network. It highlights both traditional and modern elements of travel, emphasizing the airline’s innovation while still grounding it in the historical spirit of exploration. Lucien Boucher was a master of integrating artistry with geography, and this poster exemplifies his style. The planisphere is both decorative and informative, showcasing the globe and marking the flight paths that connected Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. With intricate details and imaginative design, Boucher captures the global vision of Air France, reflecting its ambition to connect the world. The poster is as much a celebration of human ingenuity as it is a technical map. Embellished with celestial motifs and decorative flourishes, the world appears almost mythological, linking the stars, air routes, and geography into one seamless image. The sky above the globe is often depicted with constellations, representing the heavens as both a guiding force for navigation and a romantic backdrop for aviation. During the late 1930s, Air France was expanding rapidly, building a global network that stretched from Europe to the farthest reaches of the world. This poster reflects the airline’s dominance and aspirations at the time, as well as its pride in the progress of aviation. It also subtly evokes a sense of nostalgia for earlier eras of exploration, blending these two worlds of discovery into a unified visual narrative. Boucher’s work often walked the line between fantasy and realism. While the map accurately displays the airline’s routes, the decorative elements elevate the poster to a work of art, inspiring viewers with the grandeur and excitement of global travel. The historical references in the title, "Nova et Vetera," suggest that the pioneering spirit of the past—whether by sea or land—is being continued in the modern age through aviation. By 1939, the world was on the brink of World War II, and the geopolitical landscape was rapidly changing. This poster, with its optimistic tone, served as a reminder of the connectivity and innovation that air travel brought to the world, even in uncertain times. Air France, in commissioning this work, sought to solidify its image as a forward-thinking and globally minded airline, contributing to the modern era of transportation. Today, Lucien Boucher’s “Nova et Vetera” poster is not only a masterpiece of aviation art but also a historical document that reflects the ambitions and challenges of the late 1930s. It stands as a testament to the golden age of aviation, when air travel was transforming the world and shrinking distances between nations. The poster is cherished by collectors of vintage airline memorabilia...

Saul Rabino (1892-1969)Best known for his paintings and drawings of Jewish culture, Saul Rabino was a Russian-bornartist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. He stayed in Los Angeles for the rest of his life, making work about political turmoil and theJewish community. During the 1940s, he drew allegorical images of war and the plight of Jewsin Eastern Europe. These political works, usually drawings or prints, are dramatic, symbolic, andemotionally rousing. He also made art portraying the scholars and religious leaders of the Jewishcommunity, including portraits that are more delicate than his political pieces and express anobvious admiration for the leaders of his community. Before he died in 1969, Rabino exhibitedat the World’s Fair New York in 1939, the Los Angeles Museum Historical Society of Art, and theLaguna Beach Art Society. Exhibited: 'Lyonel Feininer, Woodcuts Used As Letterheads'; Associated American Artists; Feb 4 - March 2, 1974; New York, NY.
