About the Item
Sadeler, Aegidius II, after Bartholomeus Spranger
Portrait of Bartholomeus Spranger with an Allegory on the Death of his Wife, Christina Muller
Engraving on hand made laid paper with a series of unidentified watermarks, including circular forms and the letters NV; 5mm margins. A second state (of 2) impression, after the addition of Marco Sadeler's address in the lower right. Scattered foxing and multiple areas of paper tape residue along the sheet edges on the verso. Hard vertical crease along the center sheet from folding, with an associated non-archival clear tape support on the verso. All condition issues are consistent with age. An evenly printed and well inked impression of this scarce image.
(Hollstein 332)
A powerful and intricate image from the same year that Shakespeare pens Hamlet, and Henry IV of France marries Marie de Medici from the powerful ruling family of Florence.
An impression of this work may be viewed in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Harvard Art Museums.
