Vintage pochoir and collotype by Jacomet after an original drawing by Picasso from the limited book Antonina Vallentin, "Picasso Femmes et Faunes: 12 dessins, lavis, aquarelles." (Paris: Au Vent d'Arles; Greenwich: New York Graphic Society 1956). Between the years of 1946 and 1956, Pablo Picasso pulled concepts from his earlier creations, a series of drawings and watercolor, in order to form Bacchanale (1956). Pablo Picasso worked with the renowned pochoir studio Jacomet many times over his career, entrusting the studio to reproduce his work faithfully. Pablo Picasso chose pochoir as a technique over two-hundred times, both at the beginning and the end of his career. A refined stencil-based technique, pochoir is characterized by its crisp lines and brilliant colors, producing images that have a wet appearance. Pochoir begins with the analysis of the composition, including color tones and densities, of a color image. Numerous stencils were designed as a means of creating an image. The stencils were made of aluminum, copper, or zinc and would be cut with a straight-edged knife. The initial layers would be created with watercolor washes and the final marks applied with soft, opaque gouache, a process termed "lean to fat". The images were further refined in an effort to create the most vivid, colored works on paper. Pochoir was most popular from the late nineteenth century through the 1930s, its center of activity in Paris. The printmaking of Femmes Faunes was entrusted to Daniel Jacomet of Paris employing his own unique reproduction process . All but two of the images are signed in the plate by Picasso. The authorisation given by Picasso to the prints is further demonstrated by the fact that the paper of each print is impressed with a water mark reading, Ceci est une reproduction Picasso, together with Picasso's signature. Additionally there are further watermarks giving the name of the paper maker, Richard de Bas and his symbol. Without the inclusion of the water mark, you could be forgiven for believing that you were holding an original Picasso drawing.

Carol Wax's "Singer Needle" is a mezzotint issued in an edition of 100. It was originally designed to illustrate the step by step mezzotint process in the Abrams publication: "The Mezzotint: History and Technique" authored by Carol Wax. It is FIROS #44 in the catalogue raisonne. Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting.
