About the Item

An original double signed offset-lithograph, exhibition poster on wove paper after American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) titled "The American Indian Series: Ace Gallery", 1977. Hand signed in black marker by Warhol on right and by Means on left. Only some examples were signed by both Warhol and Means. Edition size unknown. Printer unknown and published by Ace Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. Poster produced in conjunction with a special exhibition of Warhol's work at Ace Gallery in March of 1977. The image featured on this poster is of a painting by Warhol of Native American civil rights activist Russell Means. Publisher's imprint lower right. Provenance: private collection - Palm Springs, CA; the collector attended the show, purchased the poster and had it personally signed by Warhol in 1977. Final photo of an example being signed copyright Stephen Verona. With full margins (most examples today have since been trimmed). Sheet size: 49.75" x 34.25". Image size: 28" x 23.25". Occasional minor crease or surface mark. Light edge wear. Creasing in upper left corner. It is otherwise generally in very good condition with strong colors. Rare. The signatures are guaranteed authentic. There were three variations of this poster published by Ace Gallery - in black, red, and blue background. Warhol's 1976-1977 American Indian series was promoted at three consecutive exhibitions: Flow Ace Gallery in Paris, France in October of 1976, Ace Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in November of 1976, and lastly Ace Gallery Los Angeles, CA in March of 1977. The posters could be purchased from Ace Gallery and Warhol executed poster signings at all three exhibitions. Native American civil rights activist and subject of Warhol’s American Indian paintings and drawings, Russell Means, also attended each exhibition. Warhol painted 18 portraits of Means during this period, a subject who was in line with Warhol's efforts to glamorize the marginalized in our society. Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist. Warhol's art used many types of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He was also a pioneer in computer-generated art using Amiga computers that were introduced in 1984, two years before his death. He founded Interview magazine and was the author of numerous books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties. He managed and produced The Velvet Underground, a rock band which had a strong influence on the evolution of punk rock music. He is also notable as a gay man who lived openly as such before the gay liberation movement. His studio, The Factory, was a well known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. Warhol has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, books, and feature and documentary films. He coined the widely used expression "15 minutes of fame". Many of his creations are very collectible and highly valuable. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is US$105 million for a 1963 canvas titled "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)". A 2009 article in The Economist described Warhol as the "bellwether of the art market". Warhol's works include some of the most expensive paintings ever sold. Russell Charles Means (November 10, 1939 - October 22, 2012) was an Oglala Lakota activist for the rights of American Indian people, libertarian political activist, actor, writer and musician, who became a prominent member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) after joining the organization in 1968 and helped organize notable events that attracted national and international media coverage.
