About the Item

NEW DREAMS is an original limited edition lithograph by the Harlem Renaissance, American social realist artist ERNEST CRICHLOW (1914-2005). NEW DREAMS was printed from hand drawn plates using traditional hand lithography techniques on archival printmaking paper 100% acid free. NEW DREAMS expresses a poignant, realistic portrait of a young black girl, profile view, combed back flip hairstyle, wearing a pale peach puff sleeve dress, as she pensively gazes forward(toward the future?); a historic rural scene from the past transpires behind her portraying an older woman in a white blouse, head wrap, and long dark skirt working in the field. NEW DREAMS presents a warm color palette of ivory cream as the background, sepia brown for the main drawing, accents of yellow green, light olive and coral red for the delicate leaves and grass. The railed fence in the foreground forms a division between the present and past. Ernest Crichlow was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1914, died 2005, Brooklyn NY. He joined the Harlem Artists Guild in the 1930s and worked alongside Jacob Lawrence, Charles Alston, and Aaron Douglas. The Artists Guild was supported by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided employment for many artists during the Depression. For Crichlow, the WPA was essential to the formation of many careers of African-American artists. He said that the WPA was "the greatest stimulant the American art scene had ever had. It meant something to be an artist then. The WPA was our haven and offered us a real entrée into what was happening. We had a lot of hope . . . Before that, very few of us had anything resembling a real art education." Crichlow was always a strong advocate for black artists. In 1969, he, Romare Bearden, and Norman Lewis jointly founded the Cinque Gallery, an institution devoted to the advancement of black artists. Mr. Crichlow's artwork focused on the "indomitable inner strength, intrinsic beauty, dignity and essential humanity that exists in the African American community."
