FAMILY IN BLUE depicts a formal portrait of a black family - man, woman, young boy and girl standing together dressed in their Sunday best. Deep azure blue is the predominant color, the adult woman adorned with a large saucer shaped black floral hat and young girl festooned with a small pink flowered headband both wear billowy blue ruffle trimmed dresses, the males both are dressed in black suits and graphic print neckties, gold hoop earrings, necklaces and bracelets add a touch of sparkle to the ladies and man's appearance. The close positioning of their bodies and facial expressions evoke a sense of family togetherness and tenderness toward each other. The exuberant, vibrant colors of Holder's art reflects the tropical influence of his native land - Trinidad.
Holder was a prolific painter, avid art collector, book author and musical composer. As a painter, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship in fine arts in 1956. A book of his photography entitled Adam, was published by Viking Press in 1986.

BACKYARD Signed Lithograph, Black Couple, African American Heritage, Quilts
By James Denmark
Located in Union City, NJ
BACKYARD by the artist James Denmark is an original hand drawn, limited edition lithograph printed on archival Somerset paper, 100% acid free using traditional hand lithography techniques. BACKYARD is one of Denmark's colorful collage compositions of everyday African American life - a soulful Southern country folk scene featuring a standing woman wearing a red orange skirt, multicolored floral print top, and dark indigo print head wrap; her male companion dressed in blue denim jeans, dark indigo print shirt and denim hat sitting in the backyard as the patchwork quilts flutter on the clothesline. Vivid coloration and textures captivate the eye with variety - deep violet, reds, fiery orange, touches of yellow, dark black and shades of blue - a very strong impression and fine example of hand lithography!

Emilcar Similien, known as Simil was born in 1944 in St. Marc. He finished elementary school in St. Marc and high school in Port-au-Prince. From 1965 until 1971 he studied at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince, where he took courses in painting, sculpture, and art history. Simil uses his images of women only as means for displaying patterns, color, and the sparkle of gold jewelry on black skin. He paints with acrylics on Masonite of any size. His surfaces are smooth and polished. Simil delights in beauty, elegance, and grace. This is done in a silhouette style reminiscent of Kara Walker.

"Circles of Life" African woman wearing blue circle earrings and black robe
By Janice Frame
Located in Edgartown, MA
"As an African-American artist in today’s world, I embody the vast differences found in our collective backgrounds. I view them as cultural assets. We are always self discovering and these self discoveries take us in surprising directions. We must gain strength from what we learn from each other as well as listen to that persistent, ever present, intuitive self. The connection of one’s own rich heritage and person growth will travel into the inevitable and critical connection between African Americans and Africa. These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture. It is this connection that cause my creative forces to react."
