Oswaldo Guayasamin Lithograph Quito, Ecuador 1919-1999 Baltimore, MD Oswaldo Guayasamon left an indelible mark on the artistic heritage of his country and powerful testimony to the injustices of his era. Marked by poverty, the loss of his mother at an early age and discrimination as a son of mixed racial heritage - Quechua and Mestizo - Quayasamin embraced his art as a means to empathetically reveal the indignation suffered by the indigenous of Ecuador and the oppressed worldwide. Quayasamin would travel extensively in life - through Latin America to observe first hand the arduous plight of so many, to the U.S. with the help of Nelson Rockefeller (who had purchased 5 of the painter's works in an early exhibition), to Vietnam and Hiroshima to record the horrors committed there and to Europe later on to work on numerous projects. But one trip that was decisive in Quayasamin's career was his trip to Mexico where he had the good fortune to work alongside the great muralist Jose Clemente Orozco. The influence of this renown artist was to have a profound effect both on the technique and activist content of Quayasamin's work. And it was in Mexico in 1968, where Quayasamin presented his second large series 'La Edad de La Ira' (The Age of Anger) consisting of 260 works, considered one of the most original and greatest achievements in 20th-century painting. Quayasamin is considered a National Treasure of Ecuador. His artistic accomplishments with over 180 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, his awards, medals, leadership positions in Human Rights organizations, testify to a life that was justifiably awarded the prize recognizing 'Life Work for Peace' by the United Nations. Quayasamin died in Baltimore, Maryland where he sought medical treatment. His ashes are buried under a 'Tree of Life' in the garden surrounded his last project, The Chapel of Man, which Quayasamin conceived believing there had been many structures honoring the Gods, but none honoring Man. This lithograph has been signed E.A. with catalog number by the artist. It also bears the water mark 'Guayasamin' on the bottom left-hand corner. Size given is outside dimension.
