GERTRUDE portrays a sensitive, pencil drawn portrait depicting a young black girl standing, her clear eyes looking straight at the viewer wearing a long sleeve dress and headband holding a single sunflower stem in her hands. Print size - 23.5 x 15.5 inches, unframed, mint condition, hand signed by Samella Lewis Printed at JK Fine Art Editions Co., from the master printers private collection, print documentation provided Edition size - 50, plus proofs Year published - 2004 Never been framed, pencil signed, titled, dated, inscribed P.P.(Printers Proof) aside from edition of 50, number may vary from photo upon availability, printer's chop mark on lower left, print documentation/COA provided Samella Lewis, (February 27, 1923 – May 27, 2022) New Orleans, Louisiana, was an artist, educator, scholar, curator, writer, administrator, editor, filmmaker and collector and is renowned for her contributions to African American art and art history. She studied printmaking with lifelong friends Elizabeth Catlett, Diego Rivera and Jacob Lawrence. She is best known for her figurative works on paper, including many series of lithographs and screen prints that illustrate images representing the age of civil rights and black liberation. Her work can be found at national art museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Hampton University Museum.
