For most of his life, Shepard Fairey admired Jane Fonda from a distance—for her formidable acting career as well as her unwavering commitment to activism. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fairey had the opportunity to participate in a Zoom discussion with Fonda, where the two quickly connected over shared concerns, particularly climate change and broader environmental issues.
That initial exchange led to ongoing collaboration, with Fairey working alongside Fonda on creative initiatives for Greenpeace and her environmental political action committee. What continues to inspire and humble him is the depth and rigor of Fonda’s dedication—an intensity of purpose that surpasses that of nearly anyone else he knows.
